Default Am I crazy to buy a 2015-16 GT3?

I am deciding between a 2014-16 Turbos and a 2015-16 GT3. I am crazy to consider a GT3 given all the engine issues? It seems like if I stay away from a 2014's GT3, they have fewer issues. Most of the ones I am looking are CPO's and I know about the additional 10yr engine warranty. Does production date matter for 2015's? Some of the GT3's I am looking at are late 2014's production dates (11/2014 Prod Date)

I would love a 2018 GT3 but they are slightly out of my budget

GT3's are just so dang sexy!

Hell no. That's what I would be in if I had the means.

No. There will be an aftermarket solution to address finger follower and cam wear as soon as the warranties are up. Dundon basically had something but stopped when Porsche extended the warranty. It's a lot of car for the money. Very appealing. I had two 991.1' GT3's and they were awesome.

I thought the late 15s only have the finger follow issue?

And then you're good with Porsche until 2025 or an additional 100k on the ODO.

Buy with no reservations.

Good chance your car might survive longer than you.

Only thing that would keep me from a .1 GT3 is carplay. Just hard to go back to not having it. Aside from that I would have no reservations.

I was personally looking into .1 GT3, but two reasons I won’t. First, no manual, and second, it’s going to depreciate down to nothing once the 10yr warranty is up. You basically have 4-6 years left, not that long. So you buy now, and in 2-3 years you decide to sell because you got bored of the PDK, it’s going to be a tough sell with only 1-2 years of warranty left. Just saying. If you have these fears now, what will it be then.

Drive them both, I'd be shocked if the choice isn't obvious.

I don't think your assumptions are merit-based in fact for the following reasons:
  1. If the engine has not failed in 8-10 years, it probably is not one of the affected powerplants. Similar to the IMS issue.
  2. The 991.2 will be without warranty before the 991.1. Personally, I would rather buy a 991.1 that is 5 or 6 years out, than a 991.2 that has no warranty on the engine. This is especially relevant if it is tracked regularly.
  3. Many folks prefer PDK, it is simply faster, less effort on the track and safer for the engine sans the money shift.
  4. The 991.1 2016 model is a different engine oiling design than the 14 & 15's. The 2016 engines, to my knowledge, have not experienced any failures due to the finger follower issue.
  5. No consideration of future pricing is taken into your assumptions. If the 992 gets priced wildly high, which is a safe bet (with ADM) given what a nicely optioned "S" sells for, this will affect used prices.
  6. Speculative, but there is a possibility that there will no ICE's in a few years built by Porsche. This will affect resale prices on combustion powerplants as enthusiasts will always want one, similarly to those that still remain in the manual camp today.

Personally I find the 991.1 GT3 to be an absolute steal. Coming from a 997.1 I can't express how good this car is. Of course the 4.0L 991.2 is great but for the money you can't beat the .1.

Some of this describes my thinking, but it's the current ~20% price difference between .1 and .2 CPO's of the same type of mileage, the engine updates AND various other upgrades that have me headed toward a .2. At $50k or more difference like months back? No. $20-30k? .2 might maintain that value over the .1, especially in a few years.

Also think lighter colors wear the aggressive styling updates of the .2 really well.

Once the 992 is out and with the 991 in the rearview, believe the .2 is going to clearly be the one to have. Not unlike the 997 gen. 991.1 to .2 GT3 was way more than just a refresh.

None of this is to knock the .1... Just sharing my thought process. I'd be plenty happy with a .1 as well.

Very different cars (Turbo vs GT3)...your preference should be crystal clear with a 5 minute test drive of both cars. 2015-16 GT3 is an unbelievable value / the real deal Holyfield as long as you don't need a manual. As an aside, have been driving an RS3 + R8 all winter, both tons of fun but always felt like something was missing...which was evident yesterday after taking the GT3 out of hibernation after 5 months. Felt so right to row the gears again...and to have some steering with feedback

It won't take nearly that long to become bored with PDK.
