Over-Revs on PDK GT3
A local shop gave me the number of guy getting ready to sell his '16 GT3. They said it had track miles on it but was well cared for. So I called the owner and asked the basic questions. He was upfront that there is a fairly large amount of stage 1 over-revs on the DME. Seems kind of odd to me, but then this would be my first non-manual car so I dunno. I called the shop tech back and he said the over-revs were because the owner was running software on the car that puts the red line further out. Does this make sense?

Stage 1 over revs are common without aftermarket software - can happen just from bouncing off the rev limiter (harmless). If the rev limit was raised, you’d expect to see Stage 2 or higher...

Bouncing off the rev limiter on track in first gear? When does that happen?
Common to bounce off the rev limiter on the street?
Yeah, I would move on.

car will bounce off the rev limiter in any gear when running manual mode. Stage 1 are pretty harmless. I’d be more interested in how many track miles and why type of maintenance the car has received. Things like hubs might need to be replaced, CL nuts, etc.

They are not only "pretty harmless"; they are harmless. Almost no one checks on over-revs on PDK cars because range 4 and higher over-revs are impossible. OTOH virtually all of the PDK cars that I checked had range 1 over-revs without software mods. Good drivers quickly learn shift points by engine sound, and don't rely on the rev limiter. Any time the rev limiter is engaged, lap times will suffer because of fuel shut off. I've owned 911s for decades, and have never met a Porsche tech who expressed any concern about range 1 or 2 over-revs. More importantly, Porsche will CPO any car with range 1 over-revs. So I wouldn't be concerned in the least.

Mine has Range 1 overrevs without any software. I've bounced off the rev limiter when driving in the mountains. No issues. If it's all range 1 then I would have no concerns.

Correct... The lev 1 (and 2) over rev are absolutely normal on our cars... Driven properly

Level one ignitions can and do occur in PDK cars. Harmless. It actually makes no sense to do a DME scan in a PDK car. Waste of money.
More important questions are how many track miles and if mileage specific maintenance to hubs and center locks has been required or performed.
And measure the PCCB rotor life if applicable. Those are the things that can cost big bucks to fix.

Range 1 over revs are nothing.....this is a non issue. No one should be saying move on based on rev 1 over ranges alone.
I wouldn't even be concerned with a Range 2 or 3.

First, trust not a word anyone ever says when buying a car without data to support it. In the case of this GT3, request to see the maintenance records. The fact that it was used on the track..that’s what this car was engineered to do. Not knowing how aggressive a third party software tune was used is a cause for concern and if it was me I’d walk. The DME report on a PDK equipped car is money in the wind...on a manual though, a must! As other’s have mentioned there are plenty of 16 GT3’s to choose from...you’ll find the right one. Getting a PPI on what’s still an expensive car is money well spent. Good Luck!!
