Same exact place with same appearance of metal where sheared off. Mine was new. His was a few years old & used often.

In both failures the surfaces were well if not overly lubricated.

Were the center bolts broken down into their constituent parts and internally lubricated (all parts except wide flat washer which stays dry) at least annually (if wheels changed frequently) or bi-annually (if wheels changed rarely)? When this is not done, it can take an enormous amount of torque to break loose…

So for cars that never had their wheels taken off since leaving factory, it will be very difficult to lossen the nut? Do porsche service routinely take them apart for clean/grease as part of regular maintainance?

My car was brand new. My friend uses his RennTorq on multiple Porsches he owns. I'm not sure if he disassembles the center nut annually.

A breaker bar should NEVER be used with the RENNtorq. Per post #282 on this thread, and the instructions included with the tool, a torque wrench must be used for both wheel removal, and wheel installation.

Set your torque wrench for 95 lbs*ft for tightening the wheel onto the the car.

Set your torque wrench for 155 lbs*ft for removal of the wheel from the car.

If 155 lbs*ft input into your torque wrench (which delivers 730 lbs*ft to the CL socket) is not enough to loosen your nut then you have a frozen/bound up nut. In this rare case you should either use the long bar method to break it loose, or take it to your local porsche shop to have them break it loose. You may run into this issue if your nuts were overtightened at some point, or the lubricant on them dried out to the point it was no longer functioning as normal.

If you have specific concerns or questions the best way to reach me is on the email or telephone number listed below.

Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with a car that has its original wheel install after years, but you should be ok. Yes, servicing the centerlock bolt is standard when/if the required loosening or tightening torque is outside of spec (happens rather easily). See attached file...

I use a torque wrench set to 150 lbs ft to remove the wheels. If that isn't enough (and it always has been) then I'd go old-school with my huge breaker bar. I also routinely disassemble the nuts to lub the internals. Obviously, the first time removing the wheel nuts, it's impossible to lube them, so follow the 150lbs ft rule and go to a bigger solution the first time. I think the tools works great if you believe the instructions.

Breaking down the centerlock nut and lubing the internals is essential. It makes such a huge difference between the nut sticking or turning smoothly. I’m not sure surface lubrication even does all that much compared to the internal lube. it’s necessary but not sufficient.
My car was only a year old when I found I needed to lube the centerlock internals and I had only taken the wheels off twice before.

Get a good torque wrench that does clockwise and counter clockwise and set to the amounts mentioned, 95 and 155, and remove the guess work.

I've also used mine several times without issue. Another note, follow the instructions for the amount of lube, more is not better, break those nuts down and clean everything periodically. I bought some wheels off a friend and there was easily 4x too much lube, plus, lube in places there shouldn't be any. This process is honestly really simple but people choose to take shortcuts.

@RENNtorq Is there any interest or discussion around another GB on these?

Would definitely be interested in another group buy. Guess I missed the last one.

Hi @dojo and @Dguth ,

Thanks for your interest. Demand has been very high over the last few months. I am currently sold out. I'm building a group of 10 tools next week and 9 are pre-sold. If you would like to put your name on the last one please let me know.

I expect to be building my next group of tools in mid-late February. My supply chain is ramping but it takes some time.

Thanks so much. I can wait till February if that helps setup a group buy scenario. I am new to this discussion as I just recently acquired a 3RS. Can you PM me what the cost is for one of these? Thanks, Daniel
