Default How much higher will the horsepower wars go?

How much safe reliable hp can you get out of a small turbocharged motor? The 'routine' offerings in the GT2 720 and F8 are now at 700hp plus. 4 door sedans are just a little lower than this. Are we going to see them soon at 800-900? At what point as an engineer do you stop adding boost and think about adding heavy hybrid gear to make a better driving car? Porsche race cars have traditionally had high turbo hp but with scary lag. They seem to be successfully engineering out the lag in street cars however. Standard 1000 hp cars may be pretty routine soon at this rate. Now If they could just get the sound a little better....

Hopefully not much higher. More HP means more weight to the car to support all that HP. I would
much rather see the same or even less horsepower in a lighter weight and smaller car.

I don't know but I hope it stops and they focus energy on getting feel and personality back into cars. Porsche has done a pretty good job but the number of cars I am interested in owning shrinks every year. I think once electric drive trains start hitting in mass the focus on specs will start to shift. We shall see.

On another note, I may be an outlier but I think turbo cars should have lag. Its part of the DNA. I actually really like the Mclaren feel which isn't annoying amounts of lag but they seem to own that the cars has turbos vs. hiding it. The mid rev range slug of torque is entertaining to me at least.

I know this wont happen but if the 992 turbo dropped 300lbs went to a smaller engine with some big turbos and just felt like an old school 90’s turbocharged car I might be talked into one.

Wouldn't that be a 991.2 GTS?

Is this a rhetorical question? What is the limit when sky is the limit? I am here to be amazed by what can be accomplished by the limits of engineering. Who else is here with me?

When there’s enough power to spin the wheels at any time in any gear going down any straight on any racetrack, then perhaps that’s enough

Rimac is already making something with 2000hp. Literally the sky is the limit. Heat management and battery capacity are the only things stopping further increases. It will get crazier before we get less crazy.

Remember when the 1985 Mustang GT went over 200 hp from 4.9 liters for $9,885, and 200 hp was suddenly the new 100 hp? And when jaws dropped at the production 1996 993 Turbo with 400 hp, and then when the 2004 GT3 got within 20 hp on the same 3.6 liters without the turbos?

With that said, count me among those who would rather see weight go down than power go up. Too bad it isn't as easy…

Ditto. Unfortunately I think Ferrari is showing us the future.

agree. Lighter is more important.

I’d pay $30,000 more for my GT3 if it came 300lbs lighter due to a CF frame like Mclaren!

Interesting that Porsche has largely chosen not to play this particular game.

^^Interesting info Pete. Actually a little emasculating if you are a 911 fan especially considering they have gone turbo as well
