Right, probably stay away from manual 350R and GT4 at the track, but they are both a step down in cost.

The AMG is pretty cool and like all things expensive MB, they should drop like bricks in price.
I guess it would be CPO GT3 or CPO AMG GTR if I am willing to forego ED.

Peter,

What are the initial ‘problems’ with the GT R that you’re alluding to?

As an owner of the car that has also tracked it twice, and someone active on MBforums, I’m not sure of any ‘systemic’ issues with it; it seems incredibly solid which I’d expect given the GT cars have now been out for three years or so.

I wonder if the AMG GT-S holds up on track. Lightly used ones currently going for about $100K or less. Randy liked it a lot on track:

I drove it at Yas Marina, one of those tourist rental track days.
It was out of brakes after 5 laps, they came back after 2 laps but they seemed to be throwing way to many pads at the car then is normal.
Id say no, the GTR is borderline track worthy for heavy track use, I think, but in the next 12 months we will see if I can keep tabs on the guys that track the crap out of it.
That's why I invited the local Rennteched AMG GTR track junky to my private track day Sebring ;-)

Hi Bish,

You know better then me, but initially weren't there drive shaft and front downforce quality issues that they stopped the initial deliveries for?
I think, I remember a problem for euro cars with the ClubSport roll bar?

Please correct me!

A few customers had to bring their car back to get fixed.

Maybe brake fluid wasn't good enough? Factory fluid from Porsche is crap too. And maybe it needs track pads? If the rotors are big enough and the brake cooling is good, I think it should be possible to make the brakes trackworthy.

Lap time seems close to the .1 GT3, and the big torque and engine in front is a nice complement to the Porsches.

I was told track fluid and track pads, stock otherwise.
The Renntech that runs around here, I cant even try to keep up in my RS.
I can catch him under braking, cornering because the driver but as soon as he gets the power down he's gone and if he has no traffic, I wont catch him.

Is this the Renntech package you were chasing above?:

Sounds serious! BTW, the Sport Auto Supertest was just run and the .2 GT3 RS was 5.5 sec faster around the Ring than AMG GTR with the same driver (Gebhardt) in both cars (7:05.41) and same R tires. Not sure what that implies for modified cars, but another data point...

Did the pedal get soft? Or just lack of friction due to overheating? I wonder if better air flow to the brakes would solve the problem and make the car trackworthy. GT3 performance for less than $100K in a sort of German muscle car sounds appealing.

Yes pedal dropped.
Its mostly lack of brake cooling, also on the GTR.

The CCB system is good on the GTR, in as far as I can read online.

I wonder if aftermarket brake ducting would solve the problem.

Initial magazine reviews of the GT R when taken to the track all stated that the iron brakes wilted after a couple of hot laps on track; this does not occur with the CCM's on the car. Which btw I suspect are identical brakes to the Gen 3 PCCBs. I would never buy the car with the 'irons' at this point in time as there are no aftermarket options. I switched to Castrol SRF, burnished the brakes, and the car stops every time, every lap without any form of fatigue. This in your typical 25 minute HPDE on my local track, Heartland Park, which I'm sure isn't as as tough on brakes as say, Sebring. I'm going to switch to Pagid RSC1s soon which are 'rotor friendly', or so I've been told.

Initial GT cars in 2016/17 did have torque tube issues and were recalled because of it, but other than a seat belt issue last summer which held the cars up from being delivered, the GT R has no issues that I've been aware of, and I've owned mine since 11/17.

I agree that additional brake cooling when done correctly is always a good thing, but as Jeff Ritter at AP Racing has mentioned, it's easy to get it wrong on a street car with aftermarket parts.
