Default Current gen. 1 R8 owner, seriously kicking around the .2 GT3....

I've never owned a Porsche, and have always been an Audi guy. I originally came from a b7 RS4. I jumped into a v10+ gen. 1 R8 about 2 years ago.

It's been an amazing car, however, it draws such attention that I honestly find myself not driving it as much as I'd like.

I have several buddies that are Porsche geeks (no offense ), and so I've always had the itch.

Here's the deal: One of those friends owns the local dealership and has helped me out with getting their first '19 allocation of the .2 GT3. I'm pretty dang interested and feel I need to jump on this for his grace. On top of that, they're one of the few dealership (so I've heard?) that will not mark up, and sell the cars at MSRP.

Am I crazy for jumping from the R8 to the .2 GT3? Or should I go for it? Totally different animals, but something about that GT3 I've always loved...

totally different cars, the gt3 is frenetic and involved, lively i guess you could say, the r8 is solid, heavy feeling and planted. I had an r8 manual v8 for a few months, not a fan only because of the feel of the car. I think you will like it, and i don't think the attention thing is going to be much different unless you get a touring without the wing. Good luck

R8 definitely more exotic looking and a classic especially in v10 1st gen manual trans. It gets more attention by people in general in any color. GT3 is still an attention getter if you get a bright color but can blend in more if you choose a tame color. The GT3 more of a hardcore sports car. I like both. You can't go wrong with either.

^this.

R8 does look a bit like a super car, though, as it’s mid-engines, low, and is basically a Lambo Gallardo in a tuxedo. I suppose attention would depend a lot on color. A white R8 actually looks pretty classy and subdued.

A GT3 can look very outlandish with its wing and especially in some colors and/or with graphics/stripes. But you can also fly almost totally under the radar if you get Touring package in a common color (black, white, silver) and without much else, because you can make it look almost same as a run of the mill 911 Carrera, even down to the chrome trim, except for the small GT3 Tourinh badge on the rear engine cover and, for those who know Porsche’s, the different front/rear bumpers/diffuser and wheels.

The GT3 will certainly outperform the R8 in terms of lightness and agility and classic rear wheel drive driving dynamics. But the R8 is certainly the more luxurious cruiser and better in the wet and light snow thanks to Quattro AWD.

Does your friend with the Dealership have a 991.1 GT3 you could test drive? Nothing beats driving a similar car to help make up your mind.

GT3 is a true sportscar. The R8 is not a sportscar but rather a luxury car.

The R8 has a unique market. It is truly a luxury sports car.

But it is a sportcar

I do not care for automatics no matter how good/bad they are but their gated manual was one of the best. I wish they would bring it back

Around here, an R8 in any color still gets too much attention for me. I've had two.

Unless it's a GT3RS in absurd colors, a Porsche gets no real attention here. You see several every time you take a drive. Most people can't tell a Cayman from a GT3, so it's only the true enthusiast who notices. Much better!

R8 is certainly more exotic and would be a better grand touring car. (unless you need to tour with luggage!) The GT3 is a better sports car and is better all around unless you need AWD for some reason. Over the years it has gotten less hardcore and is actually a pretty good street car now as well.

Only you can decide, but if you can get an allocation you certainly won't lose anything. Most would tell you you would be a fool if you turned it down. If you don't care for it, you can always find another R8. There are brand new ones sitting on dealer lots despite being marked down $15k or so. On the other hand, there are posts on this forum looking to buy GT3 allocations. That should tell you something.

^Yup what these last two said... don't wait. At all.

.2 GT3 = difficult to acquire (an allocation) especially at this point

R8 = listings all over, depreciation curve is steep... if you want it again then it's easy peasy to choose from so many.

huh?

My ‘15 is a gen-1 s-tronic, dual-clutch 7spd, with 550 hp...not sure what you’re talking about my man?

Definitely not a luxury car, it’s a unique animal that can be both sports car and daily driver (partly why I love it).

Nonetheless, I hear you all loud and clear. The GT3 will be a much more raw, pure sports car experience. Can’t argue that. I think I may go for it.

thanks fellas.

It's good to know people in the right places. I say do it but guys here have been frantically trying to get one at MSRP so be careful with broadcast.
