Removal of gear shift ****
Any advice on how to get the OEM gear shift **** off? I’ve loosened the boot and can’t pull off the ****. I know it’s a just a compression fit, but I can’t get it off.

Well, in theory, there is a plastic bushing just below the **** that can be rotated 90 deg (CCW?), which will release the ****. That said, the last time I got to that step, even after rotating the bush, I could not pull the **** off. You can, with some effort, get the plastic parts of the console removed without removing the ****.

It it a bear to get off, pulling did not work at all for me either.
I do not specifically recall what I used to create a prying action to get the **** off. May have been pieces of wood and an actual pry bar…
Once started, came right off. Good luck.

the only purpose that i have found for the "twisting" action is to release the leather boot neck. and once i had it off, i could see nothing that that action would have served to help in the removal of the ****. i could be wrong though!
anyway... i had to stoop over, grab the **** with both hands and "work" it back and forth, left and right and pull, mightily, to get it off. and when it comes off, look out! you may fly over backwards and hit your head on something.

It's a press fit but there's suction, you need to pry it off with a flat-head pivoting against something...

Hello, under the **** ( at least on my 08) there is a round "nut" that is to be turned 90 degrees. After that is spun, I needed to lever it off. I used 2x4 cut to about 4 inches on each side, and used very large screwdrivers to carefully apply upward pressure. It did release. I did try using strength and felt I would break something. Using the lever method allowed much more control.
Go slow, good luck

After reading the comments, I don't feel so bad about not being able to get mine off!!!

I remember being able to generate enough gentle upward force by putting my hands below the ****, and grabbing the shifter, which flexes your hands and generates upward force against the console. Pulling didn’t work and seemed like a recipe for slamming into something when it finally gave away. This is all after rotating the part mentioned in the other replies.

Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up having my dad apply a bit of upward pressure with a long screwdriver used as a lever. I pulled up and wiggled it a bit. I ended up putting on an IXI ****. It is way heavier than stock and helps with shift feel. I would recommend them.
