I have no idea what a Foxwell NT530 is.

its an aftermarket OBD reader/programmer.
Just Google.

How much was the wheel?
What did the shop want to change it?

This is on my upgrade list since my aftermarket radio head already disabled most of the steering wheel controls.

1995 USD plus tax. Free shipping via UPS. I had it sent to the UPS distribution center.

One Porsche dealer in town ESTIMATED 400-450 USD. The other one BID 300 USD. Guess which one I'm using.

I'd get the NT530 and DIY install - you'll be able to use the tool for many other uses, you'll learn something about your car, and it will still be roughly half the price of the cheaper install option.

Note, this means you're getting the Porsche addon with it, and so it works with various Porsche models (not sure why they listed the 997 specifically in the product).

Nice thing about Amazon is that if it doesn't work, you can return it. But as others noted, it's low cost and is capable of doing a decent amount of programming. It's not a Durametric or PIWIS replacement, but it also doesn't cost as much as those and can still do quite a lot. I have used it to change various settings in my 987.2 (seatbelt chime, auto door lock, corner light behavior, convertible top testing, read and record oil temps, etc).

I've been happy with the Foxwell NT530 so far.

It sure is!
Both about 10mm smaller in diameter, and a few mm thicker too.
The NT530 reprogrammed my car to display the lights in one minute.
Easy!

Details here.

I measured the Sports Design steering wheel in my 987.2 Cayman R and the standard wheel in my 987.1 Cayman S and they were the same size. I owned both cars at the same time so measured them one immediately after the other.

I held the two wheels face-to-face (as per the two pics in the link above) and the Sport Design was smaller and thicker.
No tape measure involved, merely 1:1 comparison...

OK, so let's say the Sport wheel is 10mm smaller in outside dimension. A 987.2 Cayman wheel is about 370mm. 10mm change would be about 3 percent.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think I am going notice whilst driving that my hands are 10mm closer together.

I do expect to notice that I am not accidentally changing gears.

Technically it was yesterday. But it's that sad time of year again... when this beauty has to go into hibernation.
Oil change done - fueled up, with stabilizer - cleaned spotless, inside and out - on wheel cradles, with max tire pressure - trickle charger plugged in. Just need to apply some leather conditioner to the seats, then the cover goes on. And the long brutal wait begins!!

1st place and outright fastest time of the day at PCA autocross, to the frustration of many Porsche GT cars. Second event in a row I've won first place
