Wonder what they are pricing the turbo RS for. Too bad, it has a ton of mods. Not sure how many are factory mods.

Raj,

Asking price is supposedly between $250k and 325k but I have a feeling that it may go for under $175k. I saw this car twice, once at the 2005 Parade in Hershey and at the 2007 968 Hershey Celebration (see attached photo). Matt Drendel, the owner at that time, agreed to have it sent for the event, even though he could not make it - what a guy! The 2 fellows he sent were very protective of the car and informed me that the last "freshen-up" cost almost $1 Million. Tried to get this car up for the 2009 Celebration by ensuring Matt that I would keep it safe in my garage but you know - "insurance issues".

I am still hopefull that a 968 affecianado, that we all know, will purchase this car. If anyone is planning to attend the Auction, let me know at dhassenbein@comcast.net and I will send you my 2 admission tickets once I get my Auction Catalogue. You just have to promise to take a slew of pictures and get the new owner's name - I would hate to lose track of this unique automobile.

No way the TRS will fetch $250. I'll bet it doesn't even make it to $150k. These cars, while very special to us, mean almost nothing to the greater collectable Porsche audience, IMHO. Porsche corporate, for the most part, no longer even acknowledges they built any front engined cars. The TRS (and the TS's also) don't come close to bringing the kind of $$ a similarly rare 911 will. And the "anticipated" prices from Gooding & Co for the list of 944/968 cars from this collection are way too much (well maybe the 968 TS clone @ $50k is not a bad deal....) a 952 for $50k - $65k? this is for the more $$ than brains crowd....

Just my opinion. Bring on the flames!

BTW, a "freshen up" for $1 mill? You could built that car from scratch for that kind of $$ and have change left over. Sorry I just don't buy into the whole "951/952/968 cars are special" thing. And yes, I have a 86 951 and I had 93 968. Love(d) both cars.....

I think the car is awesome and hope to see it fetch within its estimate range. It has had a ton of press through the years including a cover and a full page article in Pano. We'll have to watch the auction results to find out.

Just received my Auction Catalogue from Gooding - nice write-ups on all 81 cars that will be sold, including the 17 from the Drendel family collection. The catalogue will probably show up on Ebay - it is nice!

MGA-FLA - since you live near the Auction and were planning to attend and take photos - drop me a line at dhassenbein@comcast.net - I have good news about free admission.

Don, I was hoping you would fly out there to purchase the RS. Enough of the 1/24 scale model. Get the real deal. We can all chip in to help .

Raj,

Wow, that is a great offer, a free Porsche 968 Turbo RS - how could I say no?

Nah, I will stick with my original plan to see if MGA-FLA wants 2 free admission tickets to attend the Auction, take lots of photos and try to get the name and location of the successful 968 TRS buyer.

Perhaps the new buyer will agree to transport the car to the Porsche Swap Meet in Hershey on Sat. April 21?

Waiting on MGA-FLA's response via email dhassenbein@comcast.net

Just spoke to MGA-FLA and we are all set. He will attend the event. Cannot wait to hear how much the 968TRS goes for.

Great talking with you Don! Your kind offer was the push I needed to ensure that I attend the auction. I'll get there before hand to take photos & do my best to get all the info that I can.

I agree that $325k seems like a lot of geld for a 968 Turbo RS that sold for $135k new. However, biggest unknown factor is whether any former friends of the last owner Matt D., who raced against him, will bid on this car. Hopefully, we will solve this mystery next Friday with a selling price and the new owner's name. I wish the Drendel family lots of success in selling Matt's 17 Porsches (est value $13-17 Million)!

Last night on Ebay, a Porsche 968 Turbo RS was sold - an unbuilt 1:43 scale Starter resin model kit for a whopping $290.01! So, another $300 to have the model professional built, painted and decaled brings you up to almost $600. So, maybe $325k for the original 1:1 scale Turbo RS is a fantastic deal! Hopefully, we will know the sale price on Friday.

Wow Don, I saw that listed yesterday. Is that model that rare? Is it a shame to build it? If only our cars could appreciate as well.

Jeff,

The French Starter 1:43 Resin series came out in 1992 and 1993 and featured 3 separate 968 models that one could purchase; the blue 968 Coupe, the red 968 Turbo RS ADAC (German racing) version and the yellow 968 Turbo RS Le Mans racing version. Idea was for buyers to purchase the entire set. The 968 Coupe is fairly straightforward and matches the factory photo taken with Ferry Porsche. The Turbo RS ADAC version matches the factory photos taken of the first 968 TRS made, which was crashed. The Turbo RS Le Mans version matches photos taken of the same car after the factory modified and repainted the car so it could be raced at Le Mans.

Finding any one of these 3 is a cause for celebration. Finding all three is a hallelejah moment - lol!

Jeff, as in previous years, I will have all my 968 models on display at your 968 event this year at Hershey on April 20 and 21st.
