Default A little winter project

Been busy lately with the 968 and huge thanks to my buddy Bill for helping me and granting use of his garage and war chest of awesome tools!

Here's my beautifully rebuilt rear suspension courtesy of Chuck @ Elephant Racing! All new factory bushings, powder coated torsion bar carrier, zinc plated hardware and spring plates plus media blasted and clear coated aluminum trailing arms and brake shields. We went to work re-indexing the torsion bars and pretty sure we got them set at the correct height now for m030 rear shock/spring combo and 25" from ground to top of wheel well.

Also, here's my rebuilt 6 speed transmission by Mark @ Sportech in Campbell, CA. New clutch too.

3/4 finished with rebuilding the CV joints:

Here's my new m030 19mm adjustable rear sway bar!

It's not a Turbo, but it's almost as cool, ha!!

It's been a fun project. G96's obsession for quality workmanship and attention to detail almost matches mine, so it has been a pleasure having his car at my shed. This 968 will be a real beauty when done.

They disassembled the trailing arms, spring plates, spring plate covers and torsion bar carrier. Trailing arms and spring plate covers were media blasted to clean the bare aluminum finish and then clear coated. The spring plates along with every nut and bolt went to a zinc plater, and the torsion bar carrier went to a powder coater. When they got the parts back they installed new trailing arm, spring plate, and spring plate cover bushings. Apparently the spring plate bushings are NLA so Elephant Racing makes their own factory replacement in addition to the well-known poly bronze version. At this point the suspension was reassembled with new wheel bearings and the torsion bars were re-indexed according to my specs.

I would be interested to hear more about the spring plates. How are they actually rebuilt since bushings are, I think, "glued" to the plate from new?

Just wondering if rebuilding the spring plates is a DIY job.

ETA : just found this, so yes apparently it's no big deal to rebuild them...?

Thom, your link doesn't work but why don't you send Chuck at Elephant Racing an email to discuss with him? He's pretty responsive and even though you're located in another country, I'm guessing it wouldn't be terribly expensive to send just your spring plates to him for restoration. There are probably other experts closer to you but I just wouldn't know who they are. All I know is that my spring plate bushings were completely shot after 17 years and only 54k street miles. Can't wait to drive on the new suspension this weekend. I'm guessing that it will feel amazing.

Hi Trevor,

Did you get to drive you car since rebuilding the rear axle? How better does it feel?

I got a set of renewed spring plates ready to go.
I purchased the bushings from Lindsey, to find out they came from Elephant Racing. LR ask 5 more $ for the rebuild kit but at least I got them in less than a week

Hey Thom, nice spring plates, they look great. My 968 feels amazing. The rear suspension is the most solid that I've ever felt in a 944 or 968 car before. There's no play, slop, squeaks, rattles or anything. I had the car corner balanced and aligned 2 weeks ago and it feels great.

That looks familiar. I hope you have the same luck I had with the torsion bar indexing. Right on the first try. A total accident.
