today and tomorrow mark the last days of pop-up headlights on my 968.... i will begin to hybridize the fenders on monday. that is to say i'm welding in the front sections of two 993 fenders (with the cradles) onto the 968 fenders in order run the large 993 Xenon fixtures. i'm running 35 watt/6,000 K phillips lamps... to be honest, i'm pretty excited !
oh, almost forgot....
the fenders were purchased from DC Automotive in Rocky Mount, NC.....
had them search for a pair of damaged, scrap fenders but still good up front where they needed to be, and simply had them cut away the damaged sections... $400 inc. shipping.
then i trimmed them down to the minimum with my grinder.
.
update; got my 993 Xenons back from the car electronics guy recently;
cost comparison:
full kits; factory Xenon Litronic lamps at the dealer (including the bulbs and igniters), ballasts and wiring harness' = ~ $6,600 (at least)
instead i found a pair of Xenon's on ebay from a guy who did a huge group buy for the 993 guys wishing to change over to the Xenons and he ended up with some overstock. no porsche ballasts, no porsche wiring harness... but the lampsets arrived at my house for $1,500 plus $40 shipping.
i was going to capitulate on getting the stock wiring harness and the ballasts, but a few moments later it dawned on my that if i want to run 6,000 k 35w lamps, i'll need a kit... thus eliminating the need to run the Porsche wiring harnesses and ballasts. WIN !!
so i brought the lamps in and told him i wanted the 6,000 k Phillips bulbs and call me when they're ready. he retofitted a complete kit and sealed up the new wiring harness;
6,000 k/35W are 100 % street legal,
total for new genuine Bosch fixtures add Phillips 6,000 k lamps; $1,886.
leftovers; original bulbs and igniters; sold to Rennlister from 993 forum....

thanks... that's awesome. on my setup, my lights will be pitched at the extreme (stock 993) angle to keep the Xenon fixtures at the right angle. so my fenders will rise a bit higher than yours behind the lamps, but just like yours, the sockets will be set a bit lower at the bottom.

UPDATE: 6:45 A.M....
i've really screwed this car royal !!
if i showed you all photos, you'd recoil in horror. and just to be clear,
pop-up headlamps will never ever again appear on the passenger side of my P-car...
and as soon as i get to the point where the passenger side lamp can be turned on and i can drive the car with it,
i'll get medieval on the driver's side....
one more thing;
i can't believe all the trouble Porsche went into building this NASA pop-up headlamp crap by God....
especially, when they had the 993 headlamps ready to go around the same time 968 prodution started....
UPDATE 3:00 PM....
i've had a breakthrough in the past several hours....
this is gonna be akin to a front engine 993.
pure *****.
i'll get pics up in a couple hours...

I actually like the 968 headlights. I think they are "trick"
But best of luck to you on your project. I'm sure they will look great.

thanks Jeff,
to be sure, the engineering behind the stock lamps is impressive to say the least.
but to end up with 6000 K Xenons similar to the (1st photo on the 911); well.....

I've personally had an on and off again relationship with the pop up headlights. Sometimes I like them and other times I hate them. Cannot wait to see the new and improved version. ;-)

i could have had both fender's spotwelded this week, but unfortunately i've had to leave town.
left the car behind this time.... so it will be at least, 4 more weeks before i can return to the project...
but the really good news is my engine situation. the 3.0 will be going to a good home, for blueprinting and at some point, fitted with a turbine,
and me ?
i got the icbm (388 c.i. de-stroked LS7), and 200 mph transmission in the bullpen waiting to fly........ why go with this engine combo (427 4.125" bore and 3.662" LS3 crank) ? cuz it won't have the full, streetrod thump of the 427, but can easily be cammed to 550~600 hp for Sandhills or Silver State racing events, etc.... but for normal street driving (bone stock LS3 cam), it will make for a really swell car, and silky-smooth daily driver, with very few issues and reduced piston speeds and internal stresses will make for extremely-long engine life.

goin' home in a few more days.
burnin' to get this done.
btw, another 968 has gone under the knife; this one with a California emissions legal E-rod GM crate LS3 for the win;
and that cone filter is bigger than my big fat head...

I am curious to know what the weight difference is between the 968 vs LS engine.

i think Tom had mentioned the weight difference being less than 20 lbs...
but he's not running AC.
i'm losing a few lbs with the loss of the stock headlamps....
gaining them back and more with the engine. no worries.

Are you going to sell the front bumper cover after all is said and done? I like it! how much to reproduce another?
thanks,
Mike
The 993 headlight hump will cause too much turbulence at 195mph......
