Question WTB 958: Selection criteria?

I am actively shopping for a 968 as a "light duty" project car and for occasional DE. I am interested in a coupe with few (1-3) owners, low (50-80k) miles and good maint records. What other criteria are important? Is 80k miles too many? What mods are desirable or should I look for stock?

Michael, welcome to rennlist. 968's can be very reliable cars but they do have a few defects.
Make sure the pinion bearing has been replaced.
Timely maintenance is ciritical for these cars, cars should come with proof of maintenance or expect to pay close to $2k just getting all the belts, rollers etc done.
I am sure others will chime in with other pieces to look for.

Welcome, and good on you for joining as a member. You may have to travel to find 'your' car, and be ready to pull the trigger if you find the right one. Don't be hard set on a particular color, as these cars are relatively rare. As far as mods, try to first start with a well optioned car first-MO30 is nice, as is LSD, sport seats, any Exclusiv options (paint to sample, rootwood accents, piped seats, full leather, etc), 17" Cup 1 or Cup 2 wheels, side molding, headlamp washers, etc.

You can always add things many of us have done-my signature shows some of the things I've added. Carl F's supercharger would be nice to add!

Raj, although some 968's have had pinion issues I've not encountered it having put on 70K miles on the two I've owned. I'd want it inspected, but I wouldn't not buy a car that has it's original pinion bearing.

good luck finding a coupe with under 80,000miles.

most of the ones I know of locally are 130,000+miles. (mine is 153,000miles)

Looks like Rader is flipping another car-low mileage MO30/LSD car.

I second Damian's comment. I have had two 968s for over 13 years and neither have had the pinion bearing issue.

As for Damian's two spotted cars...

I think there will be more then 100 M030 coupes when the coupe registry is done.

The IRIS car is very nice but that interior is a standard offering with the partial leather option. Also, I've seen that combo in person. Although the Iris is a great color and I like the interior as well the two blues don't go together so well.

30K miles MO30 with LSD, yum. He's always pricey, sometimes to the point of being ridiculous (remember the Speedlines and the powdercoated intake manifold) but he sure has GREAT stuff.

Jeff, from the ad it sounds like this guy knows what he's talking about. That would be a pretty outrageous claim to make if it's not.

Special Order from Porsche Special Wishes Program Two Tone Full Leather in Blue and Gray that is absoutley Stunning and Flawless

I'm toying with selling mine for a possible move to the frozen tundra of Wisconsin... Check out my signature link. No mods, M030, records, and a concours winner.

Damian,
Without the availablity of actual data "guesstimates" often get turned into fact down the discussion line. Take a look at this coupe:

http://panamacity.craigslist.org/cto/1459951002.html

Seller says one of one in that color. I have 6 Maritime coupes in 1992 alone!!!
