currently have an S2 trans and I like the lower gears but hate cruising at 75-80 and running close to 4K rpms. Is the 968 like an S2 with just one more gear because thats what I want. What rpms do you run at 70-75

There is a speeds-in-gears chart in the owners manual... Mine's in the shop or I'd look it up. Someone must have theirs handy out there. Yes?

You can multiply it out, ratios are below. 1st is a little longer in the 968, the OD ratio seems about the same.

S2:
1- 10:35 (3.500)
2- 17:35 (2.059)
3- 25:35 (1.400)
4- 29:30 (1.034)
5- 36:28 (0.778)

Final 8:31 (3.875)

968:
1st = 3.1782,
2nd = 2.000,
3rd = 1.435,
4th = 1.111,
5th = 0.912,
6th = 0.778,

Final 3.778

An issue with a turbo car is not building boost fast enough in the lower gears, so the 968 trans might mean you are shifting (and dumping boost) more often before the turbo is fully spooled. The tricky bit with a 968 trans is making a speedo pickup work on the 944 Turbo. 968 gets the speed off of an ABS sensor, 951 off of a trans pickup.

Joel, the stock 968 trans adds quite a bit to acceleration on a turbo car. When I switched to a 968 turbo S trans, right away I felt a big difference since is geared much taller.

Right, but if he is coming from an S2 trans already he does not see the big change from the final drive but will shift once more. I am not sure that would be a benefit.
