connecting rods
I am getting ready to do some engine maintenance such as bearing replacements etc. All of this will be preventive in nature. One of the guys I am talking to wants to do the CR's as well. He says they are a weak area for the 968. I thought the srock CR's were forged. is that the case? Has anyone heard of issues with the stock CR's?
Thanks, MIke

They are forged. There was a design revision per the note below. Why? Can't say. But I do scratch my head about it as my car is so early in the '92 production run that it has the recessed hood badge

i am aware of this as well and almost decided against racing 968 for that reason. A respected race shop advised me to stay away from 968 engine for racing for this reason. Rods are forged but some believe 944T rods still stronger. Would be interesting to determine any difference between 968 NA rods & 968T rods?
i believe racers who have rebuilt have used other aftermarket rods.

Does anyone know of any number of serious rod failures? I am thinking of just replacing the bearings for maintenance sake but the mechanic i am using wants to do the rods as well because one of his 968 racers had a major rod failure (out the side of the block on a rebuilt engine). I wonder if they got a bad rod.

Mike, I have seen pictures of rod failure on 968 as well. It might not be common, but it did happen. That is not to say that it couldn't have been a bad part or a driver error. If I was to build a race only motor or turbocharge, I would definitely go with Carillo's.
Lately, Arrows is offering rods for our cars as well but I don't have any 1st hand experience with them.

Burning Brakes
There is a Chinese company making rods identical to Carillo's now that my Motec guy has used in several race engines running high boost. He is very happy with them, engines have been running 2.0 bar and upwards for a year now and they only cost around $350 a set. He even said that Carillo's are not that great that the design is not strong at the point most rods break at and that they only make them that way because its easier and cheaper to do it like that. There was another company he mentioned that he said had the best rods but they are double the price of Carillos. Also he said the best Pistons are JE partly because they are much lighter than Mahle. I have Carillo and Mahle in my engine and am happy with them (he said they are ok, just not as good as they are made out to be), but this guy is a Guru here in the UK and has been building top level race engines for over 20 years. Just wanted to share.

I am talking with Dan At Stuttgart Motors in Lexington Ky. He has a fair amount of racing 968 experience.

Rods....
Take a peak. State of the art technology in England. Going to use them in my 944T car. I had Carillos before, and loved them. Good luck guys.

I was thinking of not pulling the engine and just doing a maintenance bearing replacement. I will have to see how the estimate is with the different options.
