Default Life span of motor mounts...?

Just had mine (motor mounts) repaired. My mechanic told me one side was leaking hydrolic fluid... said we should repair both... then told me he ran into a snag... needed to install a Heli-coil kit....? All costing about $800.00

Does this sound right...?

Thanks

Motormounts are held by two 13mm botls on the engine side and a 19mm bolt on the bottom of the crossmember. Where would he need to helicoil? You can't FIX motormount but only replace them. Seems like someone wants to take you for a ride.

Is hydraulic fluid leaking from your power steering reservoir down onto the mount? That is a more reasonable explanation.

The helicoil thing makes no sense.

Unless........he replaced both mounts with new ones, and in the process mucked up the threads on one of the mounts, took it back out, had to helicoil the mount since the threads were all messed up, then reinstalled it correctly? $800 still sounds high.

Shiners depiction sounds accurate... the mechanic is Golz motors.... usually solid Porsche service

yes, both mounts replaced.... now they think the mounts he just put in were too old stock, offering me to try 2 more new ones,,,

also charged me $1200.00 for brakes / installed

4 rotors
new pads and sensors
new fluid / flush

thing is, the fronts were done 2 years / 10k miles ago.... however, the car has been autocrossed, brakes were shotty and sqeauled / noise really bad, he said i was on the verge of blowing the pistons in the calipers + deep grooves and uneven wear on the pads

they feel nice now

sound right?

No, you have been ripped off a few times already by this shop.

I bought my motor mounts on evil bay for $80 awhile ago, pain to change but not that rough. Took about 3 hours. Wouldn't be as long the next time, heat shields were a pain. In the "9" magazine vol. 3 No. 1 they quoted 3.2 hrs for R&R clutch in a 968. $800 seems rather high for motor mounts.

Ouch! I agree, time to find a new mechanic. Lee Lichtenstein and Dave Swanson both own 968's in the Chicago area and are active with PCA up there, I'd try to get in touch with them. Let me know if you'd like me to ask Lee who he uses.

Regards,

Thanks, I know Lee & have spoken with him (prior to this service)... anyway, i think he uses the local Porsche dealer for service.

I would highly recommend against aftermarket motor mounts. The Porsche units are expensive but I have never heard them fail within a year like the aftermarket ones. Same as belts.

Had motor mounts done last year at one of our best IMHO independents (Squires) in Seattle area. The total cost was $670 = $320 for parts + $350 for labor. I could feel the difference in vibration so I know they where bad. I was told I could wait for the change as they were OK at minimum height but I went ahead anyway as I was having all the fluids done.

Dave here. Yup, Lee does the Porsche Dealer service route. Hard to argue with him given the 170k miles or so on his 968 (at 144k, I don't think I'll catch him anytime soon!).

I have had good service at Fischer Motors in Barrington 847-304-8822 (might be kinda far for Chicago folks). They've done a lot of work for me on two cars now. Midwest Eurosport is in Bensenville and Joliet (at AutoBahn race course). I've not had work done there, but they have been very helpful folks during a few trackside emergencies.

Both do a lot of 944/968 series cars.

Deano, have we met? In know most of the P-car nuts in the area (I think) and know Lee going back about 5 years now.

Good info Dave, thank you... I may have met you at the local pca shows... but i'm new to the 968. Anyway, it looks like i'm up for some new belts, rollers & tensioners now. We'll see how that goes... if nothing else, i'll have covered many important service issues... Any idea what i should expect to pay for new timing & balance belts installed + rollers etc.. hoping the water pump is OK with 39k on it... they will check the seals... Hope to meet up with you guys on a warm day soon. Thanks very much for everyones support. Sincerely, Deano
