Default May purchase this '92 coupe. Few questions...

I went to look at a '92 coupe just now. Here are the specs:

-6spd
-non-M030
-140k miles
-new timing belt
-clutch, cam chains, water pump, a/c compressor all replaced at 100k miles
-flywheel did not need to be replaced at 100k miles
-new brakes, tires, plugs, tranny fluid, oil, coolant, etc
-right headlamp does not raise electrically
-drivers seat left bolster is ripped
-not leaking any fluids from tranny
-small oil leak from front. coming from passengers side near splash sheild, next to, or possibly from what looks like a finned oil pan?
-top and hatch do not leak
-the rest of the interior is very good
-a/c needs to be recharged
-car felt smooth when driving. shifted smooth, no grinding, brakes felt good
-front bumper is a little wavy from heat at the top, and a little less on rear over porsche emblem
-dash is not cracked

The owner has had 5 p-cars, 993's and 944's i believe.

I offered him $8500, and he said he'd take $9000, so he may still come down a bit.

No accidents or anything or record.

The only thing i'm worried about is the leak, and the headlight unit, and the a/c.

What do you guys think? Is it worth the money?

Does the leak sound like its coming from a common place?

Any info is appreciated. I have never owned a p-car before.

BTW: i work at an audi/porsche dealership, so i can get parts cheap.

Oil pan probably. This is a big job as it involves dropping the crossmember to get to it. Most cars over time start leaking in this area. Definitely a DIY if you are comfortable turning wrenches. Expect to spend atleast 8 hrs on the job. It will require you realign yoru car after done.

The headlight motor can't be too bad and is definitely a DIY($50 at dismantler or it could be as little as a fuse). AC would cost a bit as it still the old R12.

Exactly where you are at, $8500.

Yeah, it could just be residual oil from oil filter as well, so you need to investigate this further. Sometimes the rear main seal can start leaking over time and that requires you removing your clutch and flywheel.

So, whats to worry? If you run into any trouble, you have people at your work who do this for a living. We are all here to help you as well.
Go for it!!
Good luck.

The oil leak might might come also from the powersteering reservoir, maybe the clamps of the hoses are not tight.
A/C needs to be rebuilt, because if it lost it's charge the washers are gone...

this is the first 968 in the series...look for information about what was improved on in the later MYs i.e. changed the weak '92 rods...changed from KS to Mahle forged pistons in later models...etc...depends on what you may want to do with the car...have you looked closely at the top end...the chain sprockets yadda, yadda

"a/c needs to be recharged" is something that could cost a laymen megabux...

these guys here can and need to offer more knowledge/wisdom than they have so far. ask them who among them would want to own a ’92 over any other 968 MY and why ! (or why not !)

myself...I would like the car, but I would beat up the seller over the price (for a ’92)

Like Raj stated before, I think that around $8500 is ok for the mileage if the maintenance is up to date and you're satisfied with the PPI. A 92 is a very nice car, nicely updated from the S2. The major changes from 93 - 94 (and some 94's are rebadged 93's) are the seats are the updated style, the engine compartment trim was deleted, the paint became clearcoated and the wheels are different (cup 2's on the later ones, cup 1's on earlier cars). The limited slip unit is different in 92 cars as well, but I'm not well versed on the differences. I was unaware of the piston and rod changes from 92 to 93. Good luck,

Steve
