Default OEM 17" wheel questions

Hi all,

New owner here, and I have a couple of questions regarding the 1995 OEM factory wheel options. I know the 17" Cup II was an option in '95, and I'm starting to look for a set... but after searching the forums I can't find definitive info on the factory spec Cup II wheels for this car. Here's what I think is accurate, based on the info I've found:

17” x 7.5 65mm offset (front)
17" x 9 , 55mm offset (rear)

If anyone can confirm or correct that, I'd greatly appreciate it!

My second question is:

what's the difference between a 17 x 7.5 and a 17 x 7 ? I'd prefer the 7.5 if that's the factory-correct spec, but I've seen some 17 x 7s on the market. Would there be any noticeable difference, or reason NOT to go with the 7s?

Thanks so much, I appreciate any assistance!

Christina

I hope these two links help you decide?

Thanks Yogii, I appreciate the links! I actually had checked out those sites, and found that the 944racing.de site actually cites a different offset from most sources I've seen. (They say 63mm offset for the 7.5 and everything else I've seen says 65mm, which just added to my uncertainty.) So to be sure of what's actually correct before I try to buy wheels, I'm hoping someone here can confirm.

Additionally, I'm really interested in knowing the answer to this question: 'what's the difference between a 17 x 7.5 and a 17 x 7 ?" to determine whether I can use the 7 instead of 7.5, and what compromises there would be, if any.

And I'm in the East Bay—are you in the Bay Area too?

Thanks so much,

These numbers are correct for a 968 and I believe also for a 928. The 7 front and 9 rear was fitted to the 911

Great, thank you Cliff!

Pardon my ignorance about tire widths and offsets, but would a 7 x 17 with 55mm offset work for the fronts? if so, what would be the compromises?

Over the Bay Bridge. 94109 area code. Nice neighborhood. Parking is a bitch.

Yes, they fit fine. I have a car that is presently sitting on a set of 7s and 9s. The 7 is obviously not as wide and since it has the same offset, it sits a little further under the fender than the 7.5. I hope this helps

Thank you both so much—this info was all very helpful. I was able to get the local seller (he had a set of Cup II off a 993, so the rears were 9" and fronts were 7") to sell me just the rears, because I found 7.5" fronts that were a really good price (less than the 7s he had).

@Yogii you're super nearby. Do you ever go to Easy in Emeryville? Hope to cross paths with you sometime!

I have been to an "R Club" event in Emeryville. Once a month, I believe the second Saturday, a bunch of air cooled guys get together.
Usually a bunch of Singers and other special P-cars show up. The time I was there a red Carrerra showed up. The 12 year old kid next to me told me that it was only the 5th one.
The sixth one burned up.

PS who do you take your car for service?

I have also run the 7" in front without issue.

BTW, the 17" Cup2 (option code 398) was introduced on the true 94s so you'll find them on cars produced after June of 93.

I had the 7" 993 Cup II wheels on both my 968 and 951, no issues at all.

It sounds like you ended up with a 968, which is awesome.

If you're interested in a visualizer, provided you're not just going with the stock sizes, this site has a handy graphic for different options (no affiliation): www.willtheyfit.com

Congratulations on the new car; please post pictures if you're so inclined.

Cheers

Any more where those came from?

I have a pair of rears, at some point I'll get fronts to go with them and have them refinished in red.

@Yogii Ah, I usually go to Easy (the air-cooled gathering in Emeryville that is currently the first Saturday of the month)... maybe it's the same thing you're referring to? (And yikes—a Singer burned up?)

The 968 is on its way to me... and I haven't determined where I'll take it for service yet. Any recs for a shop that knows these cars? (I do my own minor maintenance on my 991, but when it needs something more I was thinking maybe Bauerwerks as I've read good things and they're nearby.

Not a Singer on fire, a Carrera on fire.
