Wanna laugh? The most outrageous quote for...
Been calling around, digging around for front of engine quotes. I think I'm pretty settled on who I'm goimg with for the pump, belts job and timing chain service.
But I got this in email today. Nearly the most outrageous quote yet, after clearly stating they could beat my even more local dealer.
Get ready for a laugh.
I'm really curious as to what that "Chain adjuster" for $1930 is... I notice no parts numbers are listed.

I think repair quotes like that are the reason so many 968s (924/44/51/28) have fallen into the zone of deferred maintenance. And I am willing to bet the average costs quoted by a shop isn't far off that number (when picking repair shops at random w/ no ties or prior business). Average cost by reputable 968 mechanic, hopefully it is something more reasonable

When I did my timing belt in August I ordered all my parts from fcpeuro.com in Groton CT. I replaced all belts, rollers, seals, tensioner, oil flange gasket, pentosin anitfreeze, thermostat, and 5 quarts of Mobil One from walmart $23. My totol cost was $395.51 and I did the job myself. I have all the manuals and tools including P9201. Because of mechanics like this I do all the work myself.

That would be 944.105.201.AE Cam Chain Adjuster that Porsche now sells as a Remanufactured part. Porsche list is $1856.31 and the $1093.55 is the core charge. Safe to say they want the core back...lol.
The chain adjuster (part # 944-105-201-AX) we list for $3,024.11 with a core return credit of $1093.55.

Well, I had my cam chain checked 2x a year for 3 years, and no problems found.
One day the check engine light came on, it said variocam, pull the valve cover and I was missing 3 teeth from the cam sprocket. Got both cams rebuilt for under 1k, and a remanufactured solenoid, don't remember how much.
I argue at some point it has to be done, just a matter of time at this point, probably not miles.
I got lucky, could have been much more money.

really struggling to wrap head around "remanufactured" if the 968 unit is built similar to the 944 16v chain tensioner.
literally nothing inside to rebuild or wear out. IIRC it's a spring, a washer and shim, and oil passages, no seals or anything.
