My car is seeing a lot of track time so perhaps it is time to find a more comfortable steering wheel. The obvious problem that makes this less than a straight replacement is the airbag and associated OBD electronics.

Has someone done the replacement to a non-airbag wheel?
Is there a link to a step-by-step process?
What type of adapter do I need and who sells them?
What kind of wheel do you have?

Can't answer the techie questions but I have the Club Sport wheel. Feels good to me. (Leather, no airbag, choice of centre badge.)

I have the same in my 965 except it has the Porsche crest in the center. Atiwe wheel made for FVD.

Can airbag wheels be retrofitted onto cars without the airbag, or does the car have to have been equipped with one originally?

You can put on an airbag wheel it just wont work(airbag won't deploy). It should mount up with the proper hub.

The wheel replacement is an easy one and there are a few simple rules you need to follow. Joey Baggadonuts has a great write up on the 964 list that outlines all the parts you need. I did the job myself and fitted a Momo Monte Carlo, very nice wheel.

I recall I needed:

Momo wheel
Momo hub adapter 7004
Porsche horn contact 964.652.104.00
2.8ohm resisitor for airbag fooling

I recently replaced with FVD also. Love it. This is a picture before the Porsche Crest. Adding the Crest on the steering wheel made the car even faster

Is the FVD a similar product sold by AJ USA for $799? AJR 348 090

It looks similar. The FVD I installed is 12.5" diameter, I believe the AJ USA one is about 13.25". Also, I think the FVD is a little thicker. I considered the AJ USA one, but went with the FVD wheel. The FVD wheel also has a nice grip at the 3 and 9 o'clock.

Oooh..I like the FVD wheel. Did you do the installation yourselves? I don't mond keeping the air bag as long as I can get a smaller, thicker wheel.

Yes, I did it myself. It turned out to be easier than I thought. About 30 minutes total.

Yes it does require a hub adapter. FVD have two different versions of the adapter (leather and standard). Difference of about $25 between the two. Since the wheel I used is leather, I used the leather version. The parts are: Steering wheel - FVD 347 010, Adapter - FVD 347 170 1801

JBH - The only thing to consider with the 340mm FVD/Atiwe wheel is that it will block your tach. This may not bother you, but food for thought.

Porshah - I saw your car at Paterek once. That color is great looking. Will you be at the Long Valley BBQ?

If the wheel blocks the tach install racing seats & harness to get lower in the car.....slippery slope looms!!!
