Ignition Coils:
I found the ignition coils on RockAuto for $128 (It was lower at $117 when i checked over the weekend but could've been a promo I missed out on) https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...63024&jsn=3607
Distributor/Coil Wires - $20 each 993 coil ends to 964 distributor ends. I chose this option b/c even though my spark plug wires are new I'm like "Gorilla grip Johnson" and may mess up the wire trying to remove the boot. https://www.kingsbornewires.com - You'll need to call the number and place the order as they don't have them on the website. I spoke to a lady named Chris. Be sure to specify you need 993 coil to 964 distributor ends. They shipped out today via UPS and should get here Saturday.
Coil covers - I'm on the fence about but I'll re-read the thread as I think someone in the thread mentioned they have an extra set and might be in my local area.

Almost done with this. UPS lost my package from Kingsborne and are trying to locate it as I type. Figured I would share what i've done so far. I will say my mantra in this project was "measure once, then drill 50 times" Like a bonehead I didn't take into consideration that I need to raise the coils so it won't rest on the wires at the bottom. I needed to drill another hole which was about 1-1/2 to 2" lower. Oh and don't forget to purchase a new m6-1.0 x 65mm socket head fastener in order to mount to the car.
Just finished my 993 coil installation, too. I would highly recommend this update/modification to anyone. My silver coils had been in the car for several years, and I just started having some intermittent cold starting issues. Time will tell if the cold start issue will come back, but the car seems to start a bit easier, and while I have absolutely no scientific data/support, the car seems to idle and run a bit smoother. I ordered my parts through Rock Auto and Kingsborme and received everything in a few days at roughly half the cost of some of the "kits" that are out there.
Also replaced the DME relay with the Focus 9 solid state version and did the RS heater bypass swap while I was in there.
Do these coil leads From vertex require and special tools to install?
I went with a plug and play solution from kingsborne as they're $20/each full custom wire. However, as was mentioned early in the thread you just twist off the leads (4 turns counter clockwise) from the 964 wires and twist these on. There is a brass connector that holds it in place.
Time for me to do this!
Just ordered the 993 coils and will call Kingsborne on Monday morning.
As someone above mentioned, I'm hoping this fixes a cold start issue I'm having that popped up after I replaced the rest of the igntion system (distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and plugs)
Another bump of this thread. One of my brazil made coils crapped itself. So, I went the conversion path to 993 coils. Lots of info on this DIY. I will just add some pictures as when I was referencing the DIY the more pictures I found it helped in the positioning of the 993 coils. My 964 is RHD, and the aircon pipes cut across the back which is different to LHD(?). My key advice is measure the space carefully before drilling the hole in the 993 coil plate. I got it right first time (for a change). I also sourced the HT cables from Kingsborne. They were very helpful via email. I had them send the cables to a Californian friend, who then on sent them to me in NZ. 993 top of coil covers still in transit. Result: fired up first time, ran smooth and responsive. Any different? Just good to be driving the ‘64 again

Thanks Spokes for sharing this other way to mount the coils and ignitors. Just finished the mod on mine this eve and really happy with the install.
Bought the kit from FD Motorsports . Not technically DIY but I figured I would add a data point. Previously I had terrible Christmas Tree effect and the car would just die for a half second then kick back up, ABS light would flash, radio would just shut off, and it was never consistent. Replaced the Black coils with the 993 coils from the kit. The car has over 160k miles on it and was still running black coils, maybe even original. I haven't figured out a good way to mount the 993 coils to keep them from free-rotating but the install was pretty painless and straightforward following some of the advice in this tread as well as a few others 12. New ones are doing great so far!
