Awful steep no?

Coils aren't that pricey

Even using Genuine Porsche wires you'd end up spending less than half!

And there are far more affordable yet quality solutions ie Kingsborne

Just sayin.

Hello,

I swapped the coils from 993 to 964 , but I can hear sound like tick tick tick in interior.
I haved to install old black coils back again.
Coils from 993 I used, was defiinitelly OK, because I tried another one 993 coils, and iit was the same sound.
I still do not know the couse of this sound..
Wires from coils to distributor I purchaed by Kingsbornwires and they have 1 KOhm instead 0,1 Ohm on old wires, due to boot for 993 coils..
I do not think, it cause the ticking.
Driving with 993 coils was problem-free, only the ticking makes me nervous.
Has anyone had a similar problem with the coil ticking?
with best regards Vlado

I understand the point of moving to the more modern 993 coils but there are better high output coils you could use.

Anthony, do you have some good alternatives in mind? I’ll be going through my ignition system soon, would be good to know what coil upgrades to look at.

I am using a marine grade coil on my TWin turbo build it is essentially the same as the AEM version at a lot less money.

Just for reference.

Do you run that coil under the stock motronic? Compared inductance & dwell to the stock coil? There is at least one table in the chip code that is tuned for the stock coil. Like injectors, the dme is programmed around the stock hardware. Be very cautious with non-stock replacements.

Read here under, Typical Ignition Coil Values, for comparative Porsche ignition coil parameters; https://www.systemsc.com/diagnostic.htm

That is why I said for reference. You will need to do your homework but their is a world of parts available today we didn't have a number of years ago. At $300+ for 993 coils I know I came across ones that work with the stock motronic for a fraction of that price. If I wasn't heading to the Hampton's for the Bridge event soon I would do the search.

The ticking you hear is most likely arcing in the wires. I had installed a new Beru wire set and silver coils only 5 years ago and one or both already went bad. The coil to distributor wires were arcing and ticking, causing xmas tree effect. However, the arcing was only visible in a completely pitch-black environment and even then was very dim and difficult to see, but still audible. New 993 coil packs and kingsborne wire set cured this for me.

Just did my conversion.
The car do sound crispier and less engine noise as well.
Purchased my coil from Amazon for just 65 dollars.
Conversion wires are from Kingsbornewires 50 dollars for 2 wires.
I simply use the stock mounting to fix the conversion.
Just an extra hole and grinding off a little part of the coil bracket to make room for cables from fuse box.

Looks like the coils are not cooled by the cooling plate, these tend to get hot.
