Sorry no pics, but I did this back in Sept. Here's the breakdown of what it cost me.
993 coil pack - I got lucky and found a NOS part off eBay for $190
Distributor to coil wires - Kinspore makes the right wires for $30
993 coil boots - from Porshce for both $15
Heat sink compountd - two little blister tubes that was just enough $3
Bolting the new coil pack right to the existing boss prevents using the boots so I decided to make a new bracket, which is what took me the most time.
Bump for a great thread! Just completed this upgrade today and made a big difference. Start up is now immediate vs a bit sluggish before. Idle is also now pegged right a 880-900 vs ~800 previously. Fiddling with the bracket was a bit of a pain along with making sure the distributor cables were inserted all the way into the new 993 connectors. But otherwise car is running better than ever!
I'm still confused by the parts. If we don't want to have to go through the trouble of changing lead ends, can't we just by 993 Ingnition Coil Leads? Coilpack: 993 602 071 00 993 coil pack covers: 993 602 801 00
plus 2 ignition cables from a 993?
The 993 location for the coil is on the engine hanger right be behind the distributor- so the 993 wires are way to short. I do wonder if they moved it there for better cooling....
You can also buy premade wires from europartswest if you don’t want to bother switching the ends but I found it quite easy. I used a blade to cut the rubber on the 964 ends to make sure they unscrewed easily.
I'm in the process of doing this work also. If I knew the Kingsborne wires were $30 (both?) I would certainly have gone that way - their stuff is excellent and well priced, love the wires they sold me for my Alfa ($35 for the full set, 9mm silicone).
Not knowing that, I ordered Porsche 993 coil end connectors that I will screw onto my stock 964 coil wires. I first verified I could unscrew my stock connectors as some have problems. I'll update this thread when they arrive and I confirm the part is a fit.
^^^ Thanks for the link on the coils, placing my order. Earlier today I ordered the custom wires from Kris @ Kingsborne, $40 now but well worth it so I don't have to fiddle with them.
$40 for both? thats what two of the coil ends work out to - if so, I agree that is a far better solution. no fiddling, have originals to install if ever needed and you get new wires.
I just completed the swap and can confirm the part number I posted above is correct for the plug ends. One thing I cannot figure out is what type of nut threads on to this very coarse thread which originally held the cable clamp which is a push on.
I'm not sure I'm going to leave the ignition module there but on preliminary testing I'm getting some rough running. This may be a dumb question but the heat sink behind the ignition control modules is not a ground is it? The wiring diagram makes it seem the ignition modules are grounded via adjacent ground point which I cleaned and tightened.
-I also cut the 'wings' off the rearmost black paint bracket
-I retained the front plated bracket. If I had a longer bolt It would need no further modification but I didn't feel like waiting for one so I added a bolt to hold it to the 993 coil sheet metal
-I did above so the ignition modules would be located further up. I checked the clearance to the blower first. Seems like they will get more airflow and be easier to work on here.
-This let me leave the wiring harness below
-I added heat shrink to the coil power connections. It looks dangerously easy for the body of the ring terminals to rotate and touch each other / the opposite stud
-Gut dyno tells me the mod is good for +15hp +19tq. At idle. And it adds VTEC. So I recommend it
Looks great! When I went to do mine I found 2 of the wires had been rubbing and the insulation on one was nearly non-existent. Glad I did this and was able to take care of it before anything happened
