The specs for the 993 are pretty close to the standard 964 coils and closer than many of the aftermarket direct replacements that people seem to use without problems. I think the 993 coils have met with Geoffrey and Loren's approval.

Nice writeup.

On the 993, the coils are mounted to the engine carrier, directly behind the distributor. If you did this, you would have even greater weight savings as the HT leads are shorter.

Good place for the weight savings.

I'm gonna do this mod eventually. I just replaced my coils though, so it's gonna be awhile. Car runs so much better with new coils.

DobieDad, if you used the Silver coils it will be sooner than later, I have had to call a tow truck once in over ten years and it was because of the silver coils. Replaced them once and those went bad quickly so I went back to my then 23 year old black coils and kept a spare set in the trunk just in case, The 993 coils made the car run great, many thanks to the OP for the idea

I'll switch over eventually. I still have my Blacks, but yeah silvers installed. Think silver are the only option other than this new fancy 993 mod.

Car is running good though (knock knock knock). Just want to drive at this point, has spent my entire summer wrenching.

Just realized that the twist end of my plug wires do not look anything like the earlier pics. It does not have threads like a bolt. Will take pics tonight.

So I wish I would not have taken one apart as I am struggling to get it back together. As you can see in the photos, it does not look anything like the previous wire terminals. Any thoughts on why this is different and will I have an issue. It appears that the other one is still connected. Sorry for the bad photos.

Nigel, if ever you want to confirm the coils aren't over/under charging and you're getting the correct KV let me know as I have the scopes to read them

The wires are an actual Beru set and were purchased new probably 7 months ago.

I bought a set of Bosch plug wires from RockAuto that had ends like that (so I sent them back)

You are going to need someone to make you some coil wires with proper fittings, try member IXLR8..I heard that Perelet has the tool to put the ends on...

Thanks Rob

I went with the info from the coil erm "debate" thread,

Bosch TCI (Porsche 993) - R(primary) = .70 ohms, R(secondary) = 8200 ohms, N = 90, L(primary) = 3.1 mH, L(secondary) = 25.3 H
Bosch TCI (black/silver) - R(primary) = .70 ohms, R(secondary) = 6200 ohms, N = 90, L(primary) = 3.6 mH, L(secondary) = 30 H

the specs are so close and the primary the same res, that with an N/A engine I cannot see any issue. Car has 1000 miles on them now with zero issues.
Thanks for the offer, I am also not sure what state my old coils are in for a comparison in any event. I am happy with the results and choice based on the coil specs

Anybody have some spare coil wires with threaded wire ends. I thought about just getting the threaded wires, but then I will need new connectors for the distributor caps. I could buy new coil wires online, however I run the risk of the same wire ends. I was hoping this coil conversion was going to be easy since I was able to get the 993 coil connectors but just did not expect issues with the new wires I had.

Contact http://www.beruparts.com/main.sc, you need the M3 wire fitting, they may be able to get you the coil wires only
