Default Not looking forward to the answer to this :-(

Hi guys.

I recently had the lower cam cover seals done as they were leaking oil. They needed doing but I assumed that oil was getting on to the exhaust and when I stopped at the lights I would get a puff of the smoke.

However whilst out driving tonight and with the car up to temp I started it get the smoke again. It occurs when I come to stop at the lights. When I got home I also let the car tick over on the drive and saw little puffs of smoke coming from the exhaust.

Car has done just over 100k, is this the signs of needing a rebuild?

Is the smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, or is it just the general area of the exhaust. You were not very clear on that. If it's just from the general area, it could be something as simple as the power steering pump/power take off that's leaking.

There are also seals around the cam itself in the cam housings. I had leaks as well there and not just the covers.

Answer Steen's question first.

If the engine has never had a top end rebuild, it may be time. How much oil is it burning?

If the car runs OK....buying oil is a lot cheaper than an top-end rebuild!

A little smoke coming out of the exhaust is not an issue. The car "not running" or "running like crap", could warrant doing some work...

It could be time for a top end rebuild, but you may also go a lot longer before doing it. If there isn't a mechanical issue, then you have time to think about it.

Get a compression and leakdown test. That will tell you the condition of the engine, rings, valves, etc... However a few things particularly if it happened all of a sudden:

1. To change the cam covers the oil had to be drained and refilled, it is not uncommon to overfill. The results of which is smoke in the exhaust.

2. Are you sure it is oil smoke? Whiteish blue? Or could you be just running rich? Black smoke? It may be a o2 sensor or fuel issue.
