The fan has very visible pitting which is even apparent in the pic, is that normal? it was stripped and apparently a lot of them look like that and have corrosion under the paint.. but it looks a bit crap.

Yeah speed holes totally normal. The fan itself is surprisingly "not that expensive" new.

The fan is mag and once the factory coating (such as it is) is disturbed the fan begins to corrode. Check your pitting- if it's deep and/or at the root of a/the blade(s) you may wish to consider replacing. Recently a member here showed photos of what happens when the fan energetically disassembles itself; ungood!
