Is the 964 the Mr. Potato Head of the Porsche world

2 reasons: it's one of the best looking marques and one of the cheapest to buy, potentially leaving a few extra £££'s to play with.
Eg for £25k I'd rather buy a sorted 964 and have a few quid left over to play with it then spend the full amount on a newer model
Just my tuppence worth, I'm sure others may differ in opinion

964s were released at a time of economic crises and a lot of short cuts were taken to get them out the door. The stillborn 965 project had sucked up a lot of development money and the 3.2 Carrera's were getting long in the tooth and noncompetitive in the market of the day. The development of the 964 AWD was also a sewer for development money.

Wow... lots of negatives here... but we can take it... ![ducking](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon107.gif)
I think its a 'temporary' condition due to the low value of the car, but it is a competent platform... thus making it a good starting place for lots of projects. ALSO the value of earlier cars has gone through the roof, thus the interest in the 70s aesthetic has driven lots of people into 'backdating' mode.
Singer is a perfect example. They recognize the worth of the platform, but the look isn't fashionable, so let's hack at it.
It doesn't bother me... as I feel backdating is a temporary impulse. It's a cool look, but I am personally interested in how we can make the 90s look cool - (which right now seems to have little value but if experience plays a part, should be 'IN' eventually...)

You've read too many old magazine articles. Don't let me get started with the 993's problems... nice mid-model refresh, but please. BTW, your duck looks awesome on your modded 993.

Anyway..........
I always thought the 70/80's SCs and Carrera are modded the most?
They've been out there the longest, so have had more time to be molested.
Greater number of those cars. Cheaper and simpler than 964s. Easier to backdate also. Already looks old and drives old...
But I want/need the improvements that came with the 964 shell?
At this time I need ABS, airbags, and AC. I also love the power steering.
So in the end, I mod what I own. Backdate mods/update mods...why not have fun with all 50 years of your 911's history. A lot of those parts work and look good together. Just please drive it!
As for updating? Well, it's all about the shell. Massive upgrade from the torsion bar car shell, but still simple and very strong. I've seen lots of 964 racers, and those drivers seem really happy with their cars. As Kai and others have shown, these cars can keep up with newer cars and they are a lot of fun to drive.
So I can see why you would mod a 964, it can do it all (not saying it's the greatest, so back down haters...I love them all)
It's a 964 forum with lots of talented people, so we're going to talk about making our cars our own.
But, back to the original question, most of the 964s I've seen... are stock with faded tail lights.

I think it's because it is still a classic 911 so you can use it as a modern platform if you want to take the popular trend of backdating.
But the 964 also has a modern racing pedigree that appeals to a lot of people. The cup and the RS are close to a standard car and you can easily get a clone of the level you prefer.
The older cars are getting to old, don't have PS, aircon etc so they are only suitable for an older look. The 993s are locked up in garages for another layer of polish. A arock 996 is boring and like a BMW.
Just my 0,2$

each model was conceived and produced in different political and economic climates and had to cater to the needs of the time.
I love the '69-73 long hoods but recognize their strengths and weaknesses, I am less enamored of the '74-89 bumper cars, though I own one I still can recognize faults and strengths, 996 is in some areas better than 993 and the same can be said off 997 vs 996 and 991 vs 997.
If you are head over heals in love w/ 964 great but you still need to wake up and at least recognize it's deficiencies as well. Like it or no there are many 993 parts and assemblies that improve on what came oe on a 964.

I think that the 964 is popular for backdating because it is a very capable platform (chasis and engine) for performance, while having the more traditional lines of the original 911 from which to start from.
As for some of the 'negative' slant comments about the 964 platform... for everyone pointing out the shortcomings of a 964, there's someone pointing out the shortcomings of their car. As Bill pointed out, Porsche didn't stop developing the 911 after the 964; or after the 993. And we all know that under the skin, the 993 is very much more like a 964 than different from a 964... the 964 just looks a whole lot better.

Yes it is the Mr Potato Head as pieces you dont like (steering wheel/flag mirrors/doorhandles/design 90 wheels ) are easily interchanged with those from other models
Dont forget..Mr Potato Head is popular world wide and instantly recognized..and who really doesnt love Mr Potato head!!

I had a 993S and a 964 RS America, I sold the 993S. To me the 993 model line looks silly. Modern in the front ugly in the back. The 964 has the classic look. 993 heavy, hot, expensive to maintain. I like the 964's bumpers.
