Project Shrek - CCU fan - replacement trial
I have been having the "getting colder over time" symptom in my '89 C4, Shrek. Looking on Tore's excellent page indicated that the CCU fan was the likely culprit, and it turned out right. I have a spare CCU that I stole the fan off, but wanted another solution.
After looking up the CCU fan price from the local parts dealer ( 964.659.148.00 ), picking myself up from the floor, I investigated another solution. A search on here made me aware that there might be a solution from other car makers. Jaguar, Land Rover and Mercedes Benz came up.
So a quick search on ebay for "denso fan" turned up a motor that looked promising. The wires were clearly the same color and placement, but the support bracket and air guide tube were different. I figured for 30€, the risk is small enough. So bid I did.
What came in the mail seems promsing. Removing the support plate is easy enough (2 phillips head screws).
The air guide tube is part of the motor's plastic frame, and is held on by 2 serrated locking washers. removing these took a very small scredriver to pry them off little by little..
Then it is a matter of switching the air guide and steel support plate that line up perfectly. The connector remains to be swapped, but that is not an issue.
If it works, I will walk up to the local dealer an MOON THEM.

I saw Your thread George, I have two "used fans" I will install during next month. Have already taken everything apart once except for the last and hardest bit, getting the fans out of their cages.... Waiting to borrow the special tool...

Great news!
We really need an alternative to the $400 spare part CCU fan.
Remember to clean the air temp sensor while you're having the CCU out.
Cheers,
Tore

Thanks Tore,
Your excellent page has been a constant source of info. That and this forum have allowed me to rebuild the heating in my car for tons less than the stealer prices.
Now if someone would find a solution to the servos...

Thanks GeorgeK.
A guy in Germany refurbish the servos, it's been discussed on the 993 forum:
