Jetta - Check your steering column universal joints. A few years ago, my steering was loose and I found that the "lock" bolt on one of the universal joints was loose. It let the steering wheel move about 1/2 to 1". Very scary. I installed a new bolt and lock nut just in case.

Vandit - Great write up. I suggest you post this thread in the 964 DIY section.

Rob,
Thanks for catching that detail in my post. I can feel just the slightest knock in the steering, it only happens as I start to turn the wheel (not throughout the turn). With a track day coming up, I need to get this taken care of. I've never even looked at the steering system...I better start searching the RL archives for my solution. I hope it's just a loose bolt... (edit: found this thread: Tiny amount of play, audible 'tunk!' in steering)
Thanks,
Udo

Sorry for the quick hijack Vandit. This type of thread brings up lots of questions… as we all admire your work and begin to think about what our own cars need.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I did this over a few months, a few hours here and there, a weekend here and there, etc. Don't think i'm super mechanic guy who knocked out all this work in a week.

As for the DIY section contribution, i'm not sure how to proceed on doing that.

M10-1.0 DIN 934 Zinc Finish Steel Class 8 Hex Nut

I also ordered a nut to minimize the protrusion into the rack.

Thanks for bolt plug idea - my rubber plug broke apart last time I did alignment.

Here are measurements of Steering rack centering tool P/N 00072191160.
Priceless tool for alignment, if you see shop not using it - they cut corners

Amazing thread.

I've used this for a few maintenance items myself. Got anymore updates? HA.

Glad I stumbled on this thread! I just saw my oil temp gauge go up after driving around Houston all day. I was thinking the worst as I was sitting at a stoplight. I was already dying from the heat b/c no A/C but the thought of my engine also suffering was worrisome. Good to know it was by design but most Europeans (Germans) likely don't suffer our intense heat. I will definitely try the resistor fix soon!

Hey, I remember this thread!

Did a couple more big projects in 2013 and early 2014 (complete intake & ignition teardown from the shroud up and complete HVAC redo including evaporator & condenser). Took lots of pics but never made the time to create new threads.

Started a family in late 2014 and grew the headcount again in 2016.

964 hasn't seen much action in the last 2-3yrs. I hope to get back at it once the kids are a bit older.

Way to go on the family vandit- just made another myself. Congrats!

Remember Volvo's toddler seat fits perfectly in the back...

If you have pics from the intake rebuild - throw some into the intake madness thread and we can compare notes...
