Default Drilling my airbox

Hi guys,

I want to have a go at this, can anybody be so kind as to post up a picture of one that has been drilled so that I can use as a template for my own.

Thanks

Before you drill, you might want to just take the cover off, and gaffer tape the filter securely inplace before going for a drive as some people don't like the noise! At least this way you'll be able to make an educated decision before cutting it. Rather than lots, the Cup cars had one large hole (the front of the airbox was completely open). Have a look in this link for photos...

What, some don't like the noise? =;>

It's pretty subtle until 4,000 RPM, then it just roars! The noise level really jumps also at any point that you give it full throttle. Very fun.

Plus, Steve Weiner says it's worth 2-3HP. (but that's not the real reason to do it)

I cut a bunch of large holes in mine, but if I were to do it again I'd do it like Bababouie did: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=19642

It keeps the intake elbow piece in place (direct funnel to cool outside air) and should give greater rigidity to what's remaining of the airbox.

Babalouie's handy work:

Great mod!

Don't get me wrong, I like the noise!! Fortunately for me, I have 2 covers - one that's had the front of it cut off, and a standard one so I can swap them over whenever I want to!!

I just wanted to suggest he at least tries before he cuts!

Totally agree. We've both been on this forum to see the hundreds of requests by people looking for non-drilled boxes.

BTW, I been thinking of you everyday lately...I'm a HUGE Giro fan and love watching the race highlights, I'd love to drive my 964 on many of those stages!

Yeah, this area is pretty good place to be for driving. I'm off to watch the Mille Miglia tomorrow afternoon!

Mine had most of it cut away but the car was too loud for trackdays so I bought a replacement (not cheap!) and sold the cut one to a fellow rennlister. Hence, I agree that it's a good suggestion to not cut until you are sure.

thanks for the feedback all. Well I've gone and done it without testing...went down the route of drilling lots of holes. Due for a drive tomorrow to test, sure I will love the sound!

you probably could have traded you unmolested one for a drilled one plus cash. They are worth more original.

perhaps.. but I wouldn't have enjoyed 20 minutes of drilling through plastic...it was worth it

200 mile round trip in the Pork today absolutely love the difference that drilling my air box has made, it really does alter the sound massively above 4,000RPM asper 911Jetta's comment above!

I can understand how this may not be for everyone, initially I was thinking, damn that is quite boomy now...but the more I drove the car the move I fell in love with the new found roar. Anybody contemplating doing it I would strongly suggest taking Andy's advise and duct taping the filter to try it first.

A happy 964 owner with a new found roar !

is a drilled airbox louder than a cone filter?

This is what I did when I modified mine a few years back. The induction roar was superb. I did put an aftermarket filter in the box as well.
