Just guessing, but I would think that water ingestion would be a concern if it were pointed upward.

I suspect it is to get warmer air, when the engine is cold.....

^^^ This.
When you are moving, outside air flows over the roof, down the back window with some going into the louvres, pushing hot air surrounding the engine, down and out.

Water - right, thanks .Could be but the 996 and later air boxes get air direct from louvre/ram air scoop
... But those air boxes might have a small drainage hole. Will check on mine to see.

Read on another thread that the air in the engine compartment is flushed every 1 or 2 secs at speed,
so I guess it doesn't really matter really

So it is not a water funnel / but I understand your question as it really would be nice to have the primary air intake just below the louvers - but not open to direct water.

Thanks Gus - yes I mean rain water but ...

this is where you're going

Ie it doesn't seem to really make enough difference to power - I'm assuming the 10deg c = 1% HP gain that Adrian quotes - to just get some cooler air when air circ in bay is so high anyway. But that's just my estimated view. Maybe a couple drainage holes/pipe under the funnel would work. But per my link above, the real gain would be ram air scoop direction ala 996.

Just fitted a carbon rs intake pipe that replaces the stock one and sits pointing up and below the louvres to get the aforementioned cooler air. It has a drain hole. Bought from design911 in the UK. Don't expect much improvement but it does look nice
