Debating whether or not to replace my Patrick motorsports single crank pulley with the stock dual pulley with harmonic balancer on my soon to be finished rebuild. Thanks for any experienced responses. Also cross-posted on pelican.

I found a used one on ebay for 250 dollars or thereabouts...and i thought that was even too expensive...I just couldnt imagine spending for a new one...the OEM price is rediculous.

Yes, I hit the floor when I made the call on a new balancer
I purchased a used harmonic balancer and had Dale Manufacturing in Oregon rebuild the rubber insert. He machines the rubber out and forms in new rubber.

Dale rebuilds the pulley and his wife answers the phone. It was 110.00 not including shipping. two day turn around. I highly recommend his service.

I didn't think it was worth the risk of not replacing the harmonic balancer. They can be bought used for a sensible price but I would recommend rebalancing along with the flywheel etc if you are rebuilding. I think there are a couple of photos of how much variation you can get from pulley to pulley!

Thanks Alex. Despite the explanation to the contrary, most of the responses I've rec'd on pelican and here have been that folks with the single pulley with no harmonic balancer just have not had the problems one would expect. Still gathering real data.

No, I agree & went through the same thing myself - I personally would have much rather put a nice lightweight single pulley on the crank to match the rs pulley on the alternator but I'm not that much of a gambling man.
I do believe that the problem with the 964 crank / harmonic balancer is probably only in a very few cases and the percentage chance of it happening are probably very small but for me just not worth the risk unless someone else is prepared to rectify the potential damage at their expense.
All said & done it will probably be fine either way but Porsche must have fitted it for a reason right?

Porsche parts prices are like that, sometimes they are surprisingly reasonable and sometimes they make your eyes water.
Buy a used one.

The problem with used is most are bad or are near bad. The rubber portion of the balancer after years of heat becomes hard and cracks (it is visible on the outside of the pulley).

Burning Brakes
I was looking at a lower pulley / harmonic balance as it is often called. Actually it is only the HVAC pulley that is rubber mounted, the inner two pulleys are solid. I imagine the HVAC is rubber mouted to absorb bumps when the HVAC clutch does its thing. For cars running without HVAC there is no need to have anything but a normal single or double pulley wheel.
