Just finished replacement of the oil hose in the left rear fender, going from the
oil console to the oil thermostat.
The oil hose (17 years old) just broke off, totally brittle, when trying to loosen the big nut (36mm). If this line breaks during hard driving (and thats what we do with our P's) you have a total engine failure/oil starvation.
CHECK THAT OIL HOSE ! and if in doubt, renew it, the hose is about 250 usd
not cheap, but a blown up engine is more costly !!!!

 

Don't discount the effect on traction of oil covering the rear tire. That will easily send you out of control and likely careening towards a solid object at a high rate of speed.

I replaced this line on my 90 C2 this year........and the line running from the oil filter housing to the case and all of the small rubber lines running to the oil tank--all leaking.

Agree, twenty year old lines are starting to fail and the outcome could be very expensive........

 

Got my 90 c2 and have a oil leak on the right side just before the wheel and if I am right thats where the thermostat is located ??? At any rate a oil change is coming up so time to get in there and make it look good .... Going over and put parts # 26 and 16 on the shifter linkage now .....

 

this is one scary image at current prices.

 

I just replaced on my 90 c4, hose #46,22 an 21 and now #54 is leaking now, so that one will be next

Wow..$250 for one hose. At that sort of money, replacing it with a custom braided hose would be a lot cheaper.

 

90 C2....after hitting a bump hard during road construction, noticed a significant leak...ended up replacing hoses and thermostat (small leak). I was fortunate it wasn't catastrophic.

 

Can you describe the "leaking" you all have experienced? Is it actual dropping/pouring out of the line, like a gash in the line? Or more like the hose deteriorating to the point it permeates oil?

I recently spent a couple of evenings worth of spraying degreaser and scrubbing in the right rear fenderwell 20yrs worth of nasty, caked on grease (will post thread w/ pics eventually). Since I cleaned it off, i've been keeping an eye on that area every evening and I'm really not spotting leaks on the hoses.

I think I may have a small leak/wetness on the nut/fitting where #54 attaches to #47, but that's all I'm noticing.

 

Its the #46 hose, but also the small ones to the oiltank must be replaced #22 #21

The amount of hoses and pipes is unbelievable !!! and they cost a fortune !

For me the leaking started with smoke coming from the right rear fender during
a 140 mph run....scared me to death, thought about a blown cylinder. Oil was dripping straight onto the exhaust , hose #46 was moist with oil near the oil console.
As an temporary fix I put 8 tiewraps (as tight as possible) around the moist place to
hopefully prevent a blow out (which worked out !) it even stopped the leaking !

Expert racers told me that if the hose goes bang , you wil be dead.....

 

I think that the price is mainly the 36mm brass fittings at both ends
