Hey Ricardo my buddy that does lots of car work says "just put it on an old tire".

I have something leaking onto the exhaust; I can smell it after a drive. Hope to find a cheap and easy leak to fix when I pull the motor.

Make sure to check the right side cam seals where the power steering pump is driven, mine was leaking from there directly into the heat exchanger, so no sign of leaks on the floor, but lots of burnt oil smell, I could even smell it inside the car especially under hard acceleration.

Starting the fan/housing/alternator rebuild.

I choose to go with a new rebuilt Alternator from Bosch.



The assembly here as I took it apart before sending out to bead blast:

And look at them worn brushes, I'm glad I decided to go through the Alternator/Fan system.

Great photos. I love this thread because it inspires me to to this on my car. Your garage doesn't look anything exotic, like mine, so it give me hope.

I really need to decide whether to get the RS clutch setup or not. My clutch is in good shape, and my RMS is not leaking (yet) but 2k to replace something that is still good........ugh...... I had a racing clutch/flywheel in my m3 and it was great but very loud and annoying, especially on dates! I once had a diva ask if my car was broken haha.

You guys amaze me. I wonder be so worried to even think of starting a project like this. My hats off to all of you.. I would love to do this on my own someday, but how do or did you all learn what to do?

I've been doing it for years, started with legos, bicycles, r/c cars, then real cars.....this is my first Porsche engine drop and the car is very unique but principals are the same, oh except parts are pricey!

I will have a home shop built in the next few years, I can then offer to do this for others as a side business.

Go with the RS clutch flywheel assembly. Much better than stock, nice firm clutch pedal, spins up nicely, and feels great. I'm in Montrose, so let me know if you want to ck it out in my car. Great work BTW. My hats off to you for the undertaking.

Always good to see the DIY project. Though a 964 is a bit different from the '68 911 I first dug into, I was 18 and basically automotive non-experienced. Look where things led..............

As these cars age, I think the DIY owner becomes the norm. Maybe not by choice, but don't let that stop you. Only thing now v. the "old" cars is that an engine removal is not wrestling out a ~300 lb blob in about 45 minutes.

And I wouldn't change out the clutch yet if you don't have to. Unless you've got money to burn. I find the single mass units on both the RSA and faux RS annoying on the street.

That was the first thing I noticed with my first 964 drop. It took most of the day, as compared to less than an hour to get the motor out of my '75S and '78SC.
