Which gearbox in early Cup-cars?
A friend of mine has a -91 Euro cup car and we're trying to sort some things out. He wants it to be as near stock as possible and one thing that isn't correct is the gearbox.
Does anyone (Geoffrey, Bill, Collin maybe) what gearbox/gerabox number the first cup cars from 90 and 91 had before the RS (G50/10) came?
My guess is that it was a C2 box, G50/03 but with a lower final gear, a 40/60 LSD and maybe steel synchros?
Does anyone no? It's a bit hard to find any info on this.
Best,
Thomas

The type designation is/was stamped on the bottom of the trans.
Here's mine type G50/30 serial#000027
If it's not there hopefully Geoffrey knows, I don't
I do know that the differences between the G50/10 964RS and the Cup box (at least for 1992)were taller 1 & 2, steel syncros w/ 120* teeth and a straight 40% lsd as opposed to the /10 20/100

There is some confusion on the 964 Cups and I'm not 100% clear on it. Here is what I know.
The 1992 and later Cups come with a G50/10 transmission with steel syncros, 20/100 LSD, 3.44 diff ratio, and the different 2nd gear. This trans is identical to the 1992 and later Euro RS and USA Cup cars. 1992 and later USA cars come with the G50/05 which has the 3.333 diff ratio which makes all of the gears taller.
It appears that the 1990 Cups come with a trans case marked G50/03, but with steel syncros and 20/100 diff ratios. The press release article from 1990 says that it has the shorter 2nd gear. However, we've found both 2nd gears in different Cups. The cars are so old, that it would not be uncommon to have mix matched parts based on parts availability / race committments, or whatever. So, I'm not clear specifically on the 1990 model.
I've only seen 2 1991 models, one highly modified, and the other completely stock, but did not open the gearbox.
The reality is that the gear ratios are the same 3-5 between the G50/03 and G50/10.

Thanks for the info so far guys. It will be interesting to see what numbers Brant will find on his box!
Also interesting with the 20/100 LSD. I thought that was a "one-year-thing" for the -92 RS street version and not good enough for racing.
Bauerjab, do you know what LSD you have?

you'll notice the '92-93 Cup was listed as 950.332.053.00, which is a straight 40

It's interesting to note that Gary Barhill listed the '92 USA Cup as a g50/10 w/ 20/100
w/
1st gear 3.154
2nd gear 1.695
3rd gear 1.407
4th gear 1.086
5th gear 0.868
Ring & pinion 3.444

Every G50/10 we've taken apart has had a 20/100 LSD. The 20/100 tends to spin the inside tire on acceleration and I think the 40% lockup is better, however, you need to use the 4 plates from the 20/100 rather than the 2 plates from the 40/40 to make it last a "little" longer on the track.
