Thought everyone would like to see this.
Very easy to do.

This is a 7 LED RPM shift light from http://www.ecliptech.com.au/main_win_sep06.html
this is a small light, realitively inexpensive solution, which has 7 LED's

install is under the dash defrost vent with an aluminum bracket i Fab'd in about 20 minutes. The Tach signal is driven directly off the pin Marked KL.TD on the back of the tack and power and ground are routed to a switched pwr take off (i used the Radio since i don't have one installed)
to install you have to remove the dash since there is not easy way to thread the wires to the tach area and then to the lower dash area - but that is pretty simple in our cars.

These 2 detail the wire connection to Pin #7 (KL.TD) - simply strip it and insert into the female side of the plug




Plus the light acts as a Voltage meter when the car is first turned on and can be adjusted to a number of settings as well.

great idea, could you fit in to the wheel hub or would that be too close?

 

Probably a bit too close as you shouldn't be looking at the steering wheel when driving..!!

 

That's cool! I'd like to fab up a radar detector alert like that. Hm.. I have some scrap aluminum around here I might need to do some bending. Would that area also support the weight of a typical radar detector (even with the remote mount I need to have the damn thing in my window.. ).

 

you could put it on the steering colum - but with my helmet on (Stand 21 Double Duty) it cuts off the bottom portion of the gauges from my sight line, which is why i mounted it higher

The Shift-I have been on my wishlist for some time now but I haven't found a good way to install it until now!
If only I could find someone to fabricate the mount for me....

Could you please be more specific on how you installed the bracket?

 

actaully i just used a small peice of scrap aluminum (about 4"x4") and cut and fit it to the defoster vent by trail and error using a rubber mallet and a peice of steel bar (actually a seat base plate from a 964 that i had lying around).
Tin Snips and a few Euros in Aluminum area all you need. I painted it flat black with a spray can.
the bracket slots between the dash and the defoster vent and is conforme to the profile of the defoster vent (picture #1&2) it is a faily thin peice. it is held in by the stock screws for the vent cover, and is totally solid. I used slightly longer screws on the i-Shift unit to compensate for the bracket thickness. That is about it really. the hardest parts are removing the Tach (pull and pry gentely) and removing the dash top to route the wiring harness for Pwr and Ground.
Use pin #2 on the back of the tack for Signal - jsut strip the wire and sandwich it in the plug. no cutting nessecary

 

Being incredibly mechanically challenged, I am considering the "industrial velcro" approach.
The stuff used to mount RFID tags to windshields should have little problem with a shift light or remote detector display; it's incredibly strong.

I checked the website for the shift light, $37 USD in shipping ! ....then I realized it's coming from across the pond

 

That should work - i would think.
yep - way, way across the pond. even with that it is 170 or so - which is cheaper than some other other 3 light solutions.

FWIW, my brother sprints a Caterham. His biggest win (at the time) came when his dash failed and he had to rely on shift lights instead of his rev counter. Now he relies on it all the time.
