Power Windows
The window on my '91 Cab will not go up or down. Neither of the switches will operate it. Just happened all of a sudden.
Also, a rattle has developed in the passenger door around the same time.
It sounds like a window regulator. Has anybody had any experience with repairing or replacing the regulator. Or, does it have to handled by a local shop?

Hi Jrb,
Would that be the passenger's side window that won't lower? I'll be attempting the regulator replacement myself soon--intermittent sticking of the driver's side window. The switch is good, and there's 12V power being supplied to the switch.
The last time my window stuck, I was able to lower it using the manual crank. If you're not familiar with it, the owner's manual tells you how to the use the manual crank to operate the window.
I used the manual crank to un-stick the window way back in August, and the window hasn't stuck since. However, I've since developed a rattle in the door panel (like yourself), when the window is--say--1/3 down. This rattle, as well as being able to un-stick the window manually, has lead me to believe that the regulator is worn out. I understand that the motors rarely fail.
Replacing the window regulator in a pre-964 911 is one of the projects described in Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects for Your 911. I plan on using this as a guide for replacing the regulator in my 964, when I tackle the job sometime during the first couple weeks of next month.

Just had my windows go out this week also. Had a dead battery before hand though. I know I have a bad passenger side switch that I am replacing. Is it true that the window motor rarely goes and its just normally the regulator?

Well, this is what Wayne Dempsey wrote in his book. Since he owns Pelican Parts, I imagine he would know what's being ordered and what's not . Also makes sense to me, with the regulator's rollers wearing out with use. Of course, the switch is the number 1 failure item.

I've owned Audi's and Mercedes over the years and all of them have had regulator problems. This is the first Porsche regulator I will have to replace. This just seems to have all of the symptoms of a regulator.
Thanks for all of the input.

Whats the diff between the regulaotr and the motor? Is the regulator the thing the window sits in, connected by that big part of a cog which converts the rotational movement from the motor into the up & down of the window??
I think I need to replace the motor in my drivers side. Is this a really involved R&R - I have had the door panels off for a bbit of a look and cannot see how I will get that motor out???

does the rattle occur when the window is down? Mine rattles when down, but if I move it up a little (takes slack out of the system) the rattle stops.
Still, my prob is with the motor. Its getting power, but not engaging properly in the 'close' direction, ie, up.

Have you pulled the drivers side switch off and tried it on the others?
I had both my switches for the passenger side window go out within 2 days of each other...

My switches are fine. The window winds down & mostly winds up. Lately, the motor has been going, but the window doesn't go up. I think the motoris notworking properly inside & I need to remove & check or replace.

So I'm going to try and track down a used B pillar and swap it over myself. Tear in the roof can be repaired.
Thanks for asking!
