Paint Respray Questions
I'm headed towards a full respray of my 89 C4, and I have a few questions for those that have done it:
1. Was there ever a thread that listed all the seals / gaskets typically replaced with their part numbers? I can't find one. Does anyone have a list they can post?
2. There was some threads in 2012 about replacing the rear quarter window seals with the 993 equivalent, but that it possibly requires the 993 glass as well. Anyone have further info?
3. Did you remove the doors
4. Did you remove the front fenders
5. What brand paint did you use, and was it single stage or base / clear
6. On disassembly where did you run into rust or other body problems that were unexpected.,
7. My C4 is basically stock with RUF 17" rims and lowered with Bilstein PSS9s. Is there any body mods I should consider that would require painting (I know this is an opinion question)
Thanx,
Kirk

I don't know of a list, but if you are taking it completely apart be prepared for some sticker shock. Replacing everything thousands of dollars in seals and gaskets.

Replacing the rear window seals with 993 seals does require 993 glass, the corners are slightly different.
3. Did you remove the doors
Yes, I removed the doors.
4. Did you remove the front fenders
Yes, I removed the front fenders.
5. What brand paint did you use, and was it single stage or base / clear
Glasurit 55 (solvent) line, base/clear.
6. On disassembly where did you run into rust or other body problems that were unexpected.
Luckily no body problems on the latest car! Usual places for surprises are where the fenders meet the car and at the bottom and corners of the front and rear windows.
7. My C4 is basically stock with RUF 17" rims and lowered with Bilstein PSS9s. Is there any body mods I should consider that would require painting (I know this is an opinion question)
Sky is the limit? I might paint my headlight trim rings if I were you. If you want to do Aero mirrors, now is the time. Since you have RUF wheels on your car you might consider the A-pillar inserts that RUF makes, they're not super expensive and I think they look cool.

Things I would think about with a respray.
1. Decide what you want to achieve and stick with it. It’s very easy to go down an expensive rabbit hole.
2. The more money you put into the respray, the better the outcome, and the less you will want to use the car.
3. In my experience, you wait ages for your respray slot, then ages to get it finished. You might not have the car for six months.
4. Even a straight car will have panel faults eg minor dents in doors.
5. Bondo shrinks with time. If there are any major repairs, you need to wait for the bondo to settle before it’s painted.
6. You will not retrieve the full cost of the respray if you sell. Painting a car makes some people suspicious.
7. The preparation may uncover damage you didn’t know about, possibly impacting your motivation to keep the car.
8. Doing the respray will highlight tired areas on the car so the project will grow in scope and cost eg rear lights, interior.
Overall, I’m extremely happy I did my car. It still looks great over 8 years later but once is enough.

You'll find a lot more than just those seals need to be replaced when you take everything apart.
With everything out, are you really going to put a 30 year old windscreen back in? Can you even get the front and rear glass out without cracking them?
How about all the various rubber grommets in the body? The drains? The front undertrays that get all scratched up?
If you remove the windshield washer nozzles to paint the cowl correctly, you'll need new nozzles, they're one time use.
So on and so on and so on. My total parts bill was a lot more than 3k.

It has a lot to do with how much money you have. I had both of my 964s repainted (original color), suspension redone and engine resealed. New windshields, all the potential failre faults replaced (fuel pressure manifold, oill lines, ccu, instruments restored, etc.). They’re reliable, fun to drive and beautiful - but I’ll never get my money out. Ever.

The washer nozzles are easily removable.
You can see the seam is pulling and the upper right corner won't sit properly. I was able to remedy the situation (because race car) but I am not happy. At these prices they should be better than this.
I eventually caved and use crazy glue to hold the seal in place. The final product looks better than this. If it was a street car I would be pissed. All it has to do is keep the water out and window in place.

I'm trying to keep the scope creep out of this project.
I've already got two other projects on the go (40 Ford Truck and a 50 Ford truck) so i' don't need to add too much to my plate.
Remove Front Bumper
Remove Rear Bumper
Remove Rear Lid & disassemble
Remove Side trim
Remove front fenders
Remove Doors & strip trim / seals from door and body
Remove windshield and replace
Remove Rear Window
Remove Rear quarter windows
Remove sunroof and disassemble
Repair rust around windshield
Repair rust around rear window
Repair other rust as its revealed
Respray car to original colour.
-------------
Fix hanging brake pedal
Replace drivers side rear support tubes
Replace driver side front jack point
Replace AC condenser & dryer while fender is off
Repair oil cooler leak while fender is off
Replace left & right rear signal lenses
Replace rear center reflector (I already have this. bought it in 2007)
Fix air conditioning
Replace brake fluid
Repair spoiler actuation
The interior could use work, but i'm going to stay away from it in 2024. I'm just going to get the outside looking nice again, and the car back on the road.
Although I rebuilt the motor back in 2007, I probably haven't put 10,000 km on it since then.
If anyone has additional part numbers of parts they replaced, I would appreciate them. Its tough trying to figure some of this stuff out in PET.
(Those windshield washer nozzles for instance)
I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions on this as we go. Its been so long since I worked on this car, I really don't remember anything anymore. (Porsche amnesia)

I should mention, I have a glass company coming in to remove the front and rear glass for me. The windshield is cracked, so it will be replaced. (Insurance claim for me, so just the cost of deductible)
I'll be using new seals on both.
Its pretty disappointing to see the poor quality of seals Cobalt got from Porsche. They charge top dollar. I would have expected better.
This leads to another question:
Where is the best place to source parts these days in North America?

2. There was some threads in 2012 about replacing the rear quarter window seals with the 993 equivalent, but that it possibly requires the 993 glass as well. Anyone have further info?
Replacing the rear window seals with 993 seals does require 993 glass, the corners are slightly different.

The 993 glass is indeed different, the two corners are slightly rounded, compared to the 964, which are more pointy.
The 993 seals give a cleaner look (in my opinion) compared to the 964 framed window seals.

I resprayed my C2 Tip back to its factory color.
What a huge amount of work. I estimate I put over 200 hours into it. If you’re going to go that route be prepared the labor to do it correctly is huge. Did I get a professional paint job by doing it myself n but I drive it as much as possible. If I get a chip I fix it.
This car was bought to drive I could not care any less if anyone thinks I hurt its value. I know I have a completely solid no rust car and if it is ever sold by me I’ll get every dime I’ve put into it back. I have approximately 16”x16”x16 box full of every receipt and hundreds of pictures detailing the job from start to finish.
Paint them if you want its your car why care what some keyboard jockey on this forum or any others think.

I replaced my 964 rear quarter seals with 993 seals but used the 964 glass without any issues, they've been installed for over 4 years now.
