Reviving this old thread because I am about to embark on a similar project.
Were there any problems due to welding the filler piece into this semicircular cutout?
It looks like it could impede access to the bolt for the trailing arm?

I work with DriverSource in Houston, TX and we have a 1967 911 that received its forward-date transformation sometime in the 90s. It currently sits as an unfinished project that needs to be passed on to someone who's willing to either continue the project or restore to original spec.
