Default Cobalt on Cobalt C2 Targa ‘92

I just joined Rennlist and I would like to introduce myself and my project. I have just purchased a one owner, fully documented 1992 C2 Targa. It’s a ROW car that was purchased in Nova Scotia, Canada with European delivery. The car is very original and the previous owner and PCA member took good care of the car during his ownership. Unfortunately, during a journey 10 years ago, the car made some very bad noises and lost oil pressure. The previous owner pulled to the roadside and called for a tow.....

Suspecting a critically damaged engine, the previous owner decided to lay the car up for the winter season and diagnose and repair the car at a later date. That date never came and the car has sat idle for 10 years until my recent purchase.

I will I’ll document this cars return to full service. I will be counting on members of this forum to chime in with ideas and knowledge. My plan is to keep the car very close to stock in appearance with some minor tasteful mods. Where mods are done, all original bits will be retained.

Default Specs

As you can see, the previous owner chose some sweet options. I especially love the Cobalt paint and interior, the powered sport seats and the limited slip diff. I’m not educated about details and i’m not sure what difference the upgraded stereo and computer make.

Default Current thinking

The car has 212,000 Kim’s ( 131,000 miles ) on it. Obviously We will address the engine issue. We will check over transmission although previous owner says all synchros were great when parked. We will replace all bushings in the suspension, shifting linkage, etc. The car will get the brakes refurbished. The paint is original and excellent except the hood which needs attention as it has many rock chips. I have read that the Cobalt paint is not easy to match.

As as far as mods go.... I want to do suspension work, Bilstein and H&R’s. I want to ditch the original steering wheel and what I assume what is now a petrified 28 year old airbag. I would like to find Cup 1 reps.

Plus, we all know how these projects evolve in progress with the “might as wells”....

I am currently in Florida but I’m flying back to Nova Scotia tomorrow. I’ll take some additional photos when I get home and add them to thread.

Default Diagnosis

It appears that I am Very, very Lucky! The issue was a seized oil pump. Because the previous owner immediately shut the engine off, it suffered minimal internal damage. But..... while it’s apart and because it’s a fairly high mileage car, it will get honed and polished, new bearings, rings, valve guides, etc. etc. etc.

Default That’s as far as we have progressed

I am using the royal “we” because although I can perform basic maintenance and a lot of DIY fun stuff, I am very fortunate that my best bud is a killer mechanic and I infected him with the “Porsche disease” over a decade ago. He will be handling all the tricky stuff and he has a history now of building and maintaining beautiful P cars.

To get completely current, I can say that I have, while on holidays, purchased a used Momo Mod 7 on PP and I’ve ordered a hub from Amazon. I plan on removing the yellow bits from the wheel and making a horn button with a Fuch center cap.

Over my vacation, I have also spent many hours reviewing this Forum for information on suspension upgrades and looked at all the various options for wheels. Love this forum....

Congrats on the new 964, she looks like a beauty. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen a Cobalt exterior on a Targa.

There’s tons of great information for the suspension and a plethora of options depending on what you want.

Since the engine is out, check out the Wevo motor mounts if you want to take the handling and feel to the next level.

I look forward to seeing the progress

Yes, will definitely upgrade the motor mounts. Thanks

All you 964 guys please chime in with any “must do” mods that will enhance performance but preserve a stock look. This thread will be a good place for me to review so I can keep track of suggestions.

Can you post pics of the interior? Curious what a cobalt interior looks like.
