Default Differences in dropping a manual tranny and engine vs Tip?

I have dropped a number of manual tranny/engine cars both C2 and C4. I have a buddy that needs some work on his engine and it will be easier to drop the engine and tranny to do the work. Never dropped one before and was curious of the differences. It is a 91 targa with tip.

Does anyone have a how to or what is different about dropping a car supplied with a tip transmission vs manual tranny? Any guidance would be appreciated.

It’s pretty easy Anthony I have never done a manual car but did drop my Tip car’s engine. I think the only difference would be the cooler lines, linkage for shifter and electrical connections on the Tip vs the hydrolic clutch stuff for the manual. Separating the torque converter and trans of course would be different also. Access the torque converter bolts thru the starter hole but they will separate with the torque converter still attached to the engine. It does make it harder to reassemble that way getting the slots in the converter to line up. 😎

Thanks John,

Anything special about the shifter. I am assuming it is attached to the tranny so it comes out with the drop or are there linkages involved? Also is there anything special about adding fluid to the tranny to make sure there is enough fluid to fill the cooler? I'm sure once i start it will be self explanatory but never hurts to know any tricks.

once your under there you will see the electrical connections 2 of them and the shift cable connection also the coooer lines they are all on the left side of the
trans. Simple unplug the connectors unscrew the cooler lines and one bolt to pull the shift cable off the trans I just remembered it’s orentation and didn’t move the shifter

Sure sounds easy. The fist time always takes three times as long but have to do a tip one of these days.

On filling the trans I just used a hand pump to push it in the trans from the quick fill

There is a sight glass on the side of the trans to show fluid level trans should be at operating temp and engine running when checking the fluid level. Sight glass will look full when the car isn’t running.

I don’t think I lost much fluid at all out of the cooler lines either. So if your not messing with the trans at all it would require very little fluid to top off.

Anthony I knew I had read somewhere about Tip car engine dropping. I found it it is in Adrian’s book starting page 453 I ignored the part of disconnecting throttle stuff in the tunnel and just lowered engine enough to disconnect cable at throttle body. I did have the intake system out of the way also in another book I found this page about filling the trans
