Default 16v Turbo registry?

I was thinking there are a few of these motors running now and a few more on their way. Wouldn't hurt to have a separate thread or sticky showing details and perhaps making it easier for the next person contemplating building one of these?

Off the top of my head there is Duke, Thingo, JET951, Raceboy, Miketurbocabrio and others I'm sure I'm forgetting right now. Then we have refresh951 who is building one as we speak. Mine is very close to shipping. Kris H's one is coming along. Spencer keeps threatening us with a S/C'd version. Voith I believe is also putting something together.

While not regular listers there are others whose information we can surely add such as JouJam and Tim in the UK. I'm sure I'm leaving some out and apologies for this.

I think put the basic parts into a standardised list and then add notes with other interesting info or what not to do's!

What do we think?

This is a good build thread, if anyone is compiling a reading list going forward.

Yes indeed. I think Tim had to sell his car...or maybe I'm mixing that up with the guy that put the EFR twin scroll turbo in...Both great builds.

I saw Tim a couple of months ago and he still has his car. I think he's decided to keep it now. He works at a performance car workshop so someone thinking of going 16v could approach him for work or parts perhaps.

That's great news. If you speak to him, ask him to update his thread. I'm sure we'd all like to hear how he's been getting on with that car and the motor more precisely??

I saw to Tim at an annual 944 meet, unlikely I'll speak to him again for a while. I got the feeling now the car is sorted he just wants to enjoy driving it for a while.

I´m also building a 3L-16V, in the middle of the build I will say. My machine guy will hopefully install the Darton MID:s in 3-4 weeks.

Here is a list of main parts that will be installed or are already installed:

* 944S-16V head, ported and with 968 intake valves (check)
* New cams, valve springs (check)
* Holset HX Super 40 (check)
* ARP head studs and Raceware main bearing studs (check)
* JE pistons (check)
* Carillo connecting rods (check)
* CR will be 9,2-9,5:1
* Darton MID:s, building on 2,5L block so the MID:s bore going to be 104mm (check)
* Fuellab 42402 pump with speed control by Fuelab FPR (check)
* MaxxEcu Control system with many sensors for temp, pressure etc (check)
* Turbosmart WG Pro gate "lite" with sensor cap (not ordered yet)
* Custom intake, based on both "Duke" and "Refresh951" (part are in the workshop but not manufactured yet)
* Custom Twin pulse X-over (part are in the workshop but not manufactured yet)

And of course.....drysump system from Gary I have already mounted the oil tank, it was not easy, it is a 3 Gallon tank The battery will be placed in the back instead.

Cost of this build: around 13-16K $, I don't want to count..hehe

Regards

/Björn

Well I hope so...but still, it would be nice to hear of progress as it seems he may have run into some familiar problems that are part of the 944 motor. ie not being able to run 32psi at 8000rpm (without major mods).

Great stuff Bjorn! Some people are hoping to build a 16v turbo motor for $2k. I think your build is a realistic but also quite cheap budget.

I think that boost and revs was run on the original 2.7 engine and on the dyno. Tim rebuilt the engine as a 3.0 and as it was going in his road car I'm fairly sure it runs less boost and revs now. I'm guessing with boost in the 20's psi and around 7k revs it would still make around 500 bhp and be ridiculously fast.

Yes, I'm sure he dialed it down a bit from the original. Like to see his later dyno sheets etc with the new motor and also what ign he finished with. Plus which turbo too.

I don't think he's posted much since last year, you may need to contact him directly for any info.

So far...the parts pile:

1986 928S "S3" DOHC head
1986 951 shortblock (64k miles)(I will cut pistons for valve reliefs)
1992 968 hydraulic timing belt tensioner setup (I will drill block to fit)
1987 944S camshafts, intake cam max lift reduced to 10mm and profile rounded off (means more time around peak lift than stock)
1985.5 944 exhaust manifolds
1985.5 944 cat pipe + 1986 951 muffler section (to start)
--intake manifold will be custom-made by me
1989 Ford Thunderbird supercharger (Eaton M90)
--custom supercharger drive pulley
--supercharger mounts custom-made by me
--eBay "RX7" intercooler + custom piping

End result will have 8:1 CR and expecting to see 6lbs boost at first, then up to 12 or so with different pulley. Down the road, 1 bar max.
928S3 head said to flow ~10% less than 928S4/944S head, so still way more than 944-8v head.

As you all know I have been talking this up for YEARS now...but over those years my free time to do this kind of work can be measured in HOURS. But very, very soon...time will open up, and this will get done, finally...nothing like my original concept of a supercharged 944 from 2007.

Like Spencer Im also draging this project (which scope changed drastically about 4 times )from another decade. If all goes well it should at least fire up in 2016.

parts I have:

968 head
2.7 block bored to 104.5mm
104.5 16v modified crown Andial Mahle 3.0t ferrostan pistons
S2 Crank
Droste Ingenieure H rods
Pankl rod bolts
ARP head studs
968 belt tensioner system
968 oil cooler setup
7670 EFR twin scroll wastegated BB/gamma ti turbo
Haltech platinum sport 1000 with can controlled WB1 wideband
Clewett crank trigger setup
Racepak / Haltech iq3 logger dash with gps/g/telemetry
1985.5 944 na full leather with sport seats, full m030 option and original turbo cup bilsteins
Turbo S AOR gearbox

Static cr between 8 and 8.5:1 depending on how things will come together, optimally I'd want 8.3:1.

Accepted! Im going to go with a few shortcuts like stock ic, turbo + 16v intake welded tigether to put things together as fast as possible to at least fire the beast up. My time is limited to aprox middle of december when I'll become a father. Everybody is going on about how life changes after that and zero importance projects are indefinitely postproned. I don't believe that but I better move my *** while I still can.
