Default 3L to 2.5L Block girdle compability ?

Straight to the question will a 2.5L girdle fit in a 3L block are they the same and can someone confirm this ?

Story:

I have this rather nice machined 3L block with sleves and $$$$ invested in it. Problem is i just found out that the MAIN Bearing Surface on the girdle has been damaged somehow "dropped or something" . I know that useing a girdle that does not belong to the block is generally a bad idea but porsche keep adequate toleranses across the board so maybe i can get away with it ..

I have several 2.5L blocks but only one 3L block and i cant belive anyone would sell me only the Girdle in a working block.

have the bottom of the block and the "top" of your girdle machined, and re-bored?

That will possibly shift crankshaft height many reasons why i cant do that. And hopefully no more machine work this stuff cost way to much here.

I've never tried, so don't know all the issues that might arise. However, when you install a 3 liter crank in a 2.5 motor, the rods will hit the girdle unless you grind the girdle a bit or use aftermarket rods, so I'd assume you would run into the same issue if you used a 2.5 girdle on a 3.0 block. Also, the blocks and girdle are machined as a team, so anytime you change the girdle you'd want to have the block/girdle line bored.

well clearance to rod is not an issue as aftermarket "different" rods will be in place... I hope it physically fits and then i can check if i have issues with roundout etc . Have it measured and checked. I was hoping not having any need for oversized bearings .

Hi Adonay, I have a spare 968 girdle kicking around in the back of the garage . Let me check the bearing surfaces tomorrow and if ok you are welcome to it if you pay shipping from the uk.

Aren't block and girdle align bored together and when using non-matched ones, align boring is needed for the mains?

As far as i know, you are correct. Just like the balance-shaft caps, the girdle is line-bored

YES. But i am hoping porsche had tight tolarances on those .. Only one way to find out ...

I read all kinds of crazy stuff these days even people who have repaired them with JBWELD or Alu solder not that any of those are anything other than last resort..

Hi Joacim.

The girdle looks ok to my eye but here are a couple of photos for you to make sure your happy with it.
I bought a 968 crankshaft (35000 miles) a couple of years ago from a car that had a split cylinder and they sent this cradle to support the crank in transit. I am assuming it is the cradle from the 3 litre block but please check part number to confirm.
If you still want it my email is simonglawrence@gmail.com for your addresss and I can tell you what shipping will be.
Regards Simon

When putting the engine back together I would double check the tolerances with Plastigauge. It will take a little more time but it should give you peace of mind on any tolerance issue.
