I would recommend using roll-tap when threading the block for timeserts, not regular cutting tap. Roll tap makes much stronger thread by not cutting the aluminium but rather displacing it and making it more dense.

When I twin-plugged my 911 cylinder heads (total of 12 of them) I ordered M12x1.5 roll tap (used 12mm plugs as secondaries like Porsche factory did back in RSR days to leave more material in the head). It needs special drill too (for M12 it was 11.8mm iirc).

Also, 911 guys usually prefer Casesavers over Timeserts as these have more coarse thread (2mm pitch) on the outside to stick good in the magnesium case. These are pretty straight forward to have custom made, just pick proper material.

This was my block before timeserting, it looks like there is enough meat since the shop that did it had to make a custom beefier 'timesert' piece for this hole.

looking at the pictures above, howabout coming up with a mega-time sert, a thread-in piece that occupies the full length of the head stud "tube"?

Tube is there for a reason. Because of this tube you don't need torque plate for machining cylinders.

But could be shortened a bit I guess.

Some shops use torque plates and heat the block.

How do they set the bore diameter if the block is heated?

Torque plate is needed where threads start at the deck surface or in line with cylinder walls because when the bolts are torqued they pull the material and deform cylinders.

In this case, threads are under cylinders and do not deform them when torqued. Thats why factory procedure doesn't involve torque plate.

I tried to put room temperature pistons in ~ 10c block and the pistons didnt fit. I really wonder how this hot machining method works.

We want to go to 19mm. Looks like there is enough room around it to give it a try by referring to another block.
