Default another one of those "which turbo" threads

lets say you were building a 3.3l turbo stroker, 8:1, 2.7 8v head.

which turbo would you go with?
which direct bolt up would you go with?
how limiting would a lindsey 53 be?
does anyone at this point make a garrett kit? not really looking to cut/weld..etc
how important is a 3" downpipe?

GT3071 or GT3076, depending on where you want your power band, you will also want to look at your hot side for how quick to get there. You will need to fabricate your fittings. SFR makes a down pipe and an adapter for the mount. All piping to and from effect spool. Mine comes on at around 2500 rpm and HP flattens to around 370 to 380 RWHP at about 6000 rpm and stays flat.

Whose engine management system are you going to use?

To small!!!!! especuall the 3071r. something people use on 2L or a 2.5.

GT3582r is what you want. or a GTX3582r .82 turbine housing.

the LRs53 is to small again. It's as big as a gt3076 roughly. probably a little smaller.

Not willing to modify anything
LRs75 #10 housing. stage 5 i'd probably go with a 3.3L

Yes a 3" down pipe is very important with a turbo with a 3" exhaust outlet. or it's just causing a bottle neck. 3" turbo back is what you'd want.

For a 3.3 liter, I'd consider an HX35 for super fast spool, or even an HX40 compressor/HX35 turbine hybrid. Nearly bolt on, just have to fab a downpipe and add a T3 flange for the inlet on the crossover. It bolts up to the stock mount.

Agree with Paulyy, a LR53 or any GT30 turbo is much too small for a 3.3 liter engine. FWIW, I'll be running an HX35 with a #12 housing on my 16v 2.9 liter and expect very good spoolup.

I reckon a GTX 3076 w/ 1.02 housing could be interesting too.

i think the gtx3576r would be a better candidate for what you're thinking Patrick. same compressor, just a larger turbine wheel ect.

ugh, my cheap big motor build is turning into an expensive big motor build (dont they all).

I swear I've been researching turbos a ton, but its still like a foreign language to me.

since LR s75 can be "garret tbb cartridge" I assume that only means the bearings? the wheels, housings.etc are not garret correct?

is there a way to quantify something like the s75 vs the gtx3576r? While I dont want to run out of steam, I do want to minimize lag. I'm expecting some decent off turbo grunt, but I dont want something that kicks in a 4k.

with the gtx3576r, you then have a choice of compressor housing right? t3 or t4? and I would have to modify my crossover pipe to match the housing?

Also with the housing there is the choice of how the downpipe connect, vband vs 4 bolt? and a new downpipe has to be fabricated? is there an advantage to either? One issue I've always had with my kkk based turbos are having the hot side bolts back out. im assuming this is no different? ? (I now use mechanical locking bolts)

Yeah I forget about the GTX3576 version.

If you're building a big motor I don't think the 35 is a problem. I'm sure ours is getting into stride before 4k on the track.

3.3L i honestly wouldn't worry about lag.

a gt3582R is a good option. you won't run out of steam with any of these 600-750 hp turbos.

vband is good because it's 1 clamp, much easier to put on and take off.

the S75 is like the gt3582R. the compressor wheels are garrett and so are the turbine wheels. just not the 'gt' series wheels.

You won't worry about lag with that size engine.

I like the holsets. Talk to West, he has found a matching combo to mine. The holsets are strong.

Otherwise, a gt35 would be my choice. Gt 30 will be way too small

While a larger turbo will give you higher peak power, you need to decide where you want the power to come on. Garrett's website has a turbo size calculator that will give you some options to assist in your decision.

IIRC the S75 uses a T66 compressor, which is quite a bit larger than the GT3582R's compressor as used on the S65. I know this from measuring both the S65 and S75 compressors.

The S53 uses most likely a GT3076R compressor.

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

so, when we say the s53 is too small, what do we mean exactly? i'm really only wanting to push 15psi. will it do that up to 6k? when does it taper off? id like to keep something static if possible.
