Off-the-shelf vs Custom Exhaust System

I beg to differ! This is a work of art in my books!

I built this at home in 1.25 days.

But a question for you. On the heat shield to the starter. Did you mount it to the body, or the exhaust? And it looks almost like it came from some other car, rather than something that was fabbed. What did you do there? I'm building mine right now (though with a MIG, and it ain't as pretty!(.

I would love to tell you what I really want to say but I will digress. While I seldom hand weld anymore, I use the orbital a lot. Welding is welding, just because I can push a button and make welds that look like that doesn't mean it is not welding. I worked in a body shop for four years while going to college and used a MIG almost daily. Please don't tell me what I have and have not done when you don't have a clue.

After what I have gone through putting an aftermarket header/exhaust systems on my car and the various fitment issues I have experienced over the years, I would offer the following:
Lindsey 3" mild steel system- fitment was reasonably good, and it was a good value all in all. They delivered promptly. Nothing bad to say about the experience.
SFR- worst experience ever. Paid top dollar for a full option system, it took forever for Tim to get it to me and then when I did receive it, the headers were complete garbage. The crossover did NOT fit and will require cutting and reselling to clear the oil pan. The only parts that were good (great, actually) were the Fabspeed exhaust pieces that Tim sent.
Fabspeed- fits great, worth the money if you want to go aftermarket. Just don't buy it from SFR...
FRF- after I (in reality, it was Karl doing the vast majority of the cussing) gave up trying to make the SFR garbage work, it took me about ten months of working with and occasionally having to harass Dave to finally wind up with everything I ordered from him, but Dave was a decent guy to deal with overall. The final finished product fits great, and the only outstanding issue I have with what I got from him had to do with the merge collector on the header, which was substandard in design and could be greatly improved upon.

Good might be an understatement, after looking closely an hour ago at the machine welds, I think yours actually look better. Great job again! My welder did the above hinge by hand and it looks very nice considering how thick that SS is, but your exhaust is really something special. You should start a business!

All of that you do by hand? Wouldn't be much easier and faster with an orbital?
I work on ultra high vacuum thin film deposition and etch tools for the semiconductor and data storage industry. We manufacture, install, and service them. Tons and tons of welding involved, especially to facilitate the equipment.

I have not seen the Orbitalum in action but heard about it. German made right? I am sure it is too notch. Could have used you in Toronto last year. We installed a few of these big boys at Ontario Semiconductor. The intricate welding is performed on the chambers. Afterwards it must be sent out for electropolishing which must be the same for pharmaceutical.
