From what I found they are not the same. Some gearing is different and apparently the S2 transaxle has a stronger differential.

Transmission 083 F is the same in design and repairing procedures as the 944 S transmission 083 D, except for a few deviations.

Most Important Deviations:
- Longer 5th gear 36 : 28 i = 0.778
- Final drive ratio 8 : 31 i = 3.875
- Design distance "Ro" = 59.65 mm
- Stronger differential

S/S2 trans will offer some nice acceleration if going into a turbo car....for the drag car?

I would put the transmission bracing plate on whichever you choose, might as well prevent possibly breaking the case or damaging gears if you can avoid it:

I'm putting an S2 transaxle into my 88TS since I didn't get it with the original trans, so might as do something different and tailor the car to my driving needs/style.

99% sure that the r&p is smaller/weaker Sid.

I was just going to pick it up since its cheap. I've used an s2 trans before, but I think that it'd certainly be too short of gearing now. Iirc, 4th gear winds out at 126mph.

I was thinking of experimenting with what I could do to improve my ET and run low boost.

If I could launch it harder I may me able to break into the tens with less power than I was making.

Be kinda curious how you went with a stock 951 trans in terms of gearing? Might be slower off the line but possibly save you an extra gearchange depending?

jack up the rear and run taller tires with the S2 box

Here is the PDF. It apears the r&p are the same. Might buy it and just try it.

Sid, I think that's wrong. PM Sean / JET951. I'm certain he tried an rp from an S and guess what, Destroyed it at the drags. It was later established that the S2 version was bigger/stronger.
Pretty sure Jim / Oddball warned of this too.

Sid, I heard the same as Patrick. I sold my old car to a friend telling him how good the S2 R&P was. He had Sean recreate the car, the R&P turned out to be an S and they dumped it, was ok for standard use but didn't think it was up to circuit use with a Stage 3 Vitesse. I imagine your use will be harder.

Thanks for that info guys. I'll just pass on it then. Like I said, it was going to be for experimental purposes anyway.

FWIW, part numbers are different, though ratios are same. Both are 016409143, but one ends in BF, the other BD. The biggest sign, IMHO, is the cost. The S2 one costs about twice what the S one does from Porsche.

Different ring and pinion ratio, different fifth gearset.

I believe that both the S and the S2 have 9:35 (3.889) R&P's, do they not? Not sure about 5th, though.
