good luck with this ****ing state...
i asked a BAR referee supervisor if i could take a 5.3 vortec motor, bore it to 99mm and install all LS1 parts (pistons/rods/heads/cam/intake/exhaust/computer), so it would be identical to an LS1 with the ONLY difference being the material the block was made of...they said no, it's a truck motor and therefore "probably a gross polluter". he asked why i wanted to do that versus buying an LS1 and i explained the $2-3000 price difference...he just said "good luck with that"

Joel, headers make it much easier. Here in Colorado there's no reason not to use them, as emissions doesn't care.
You can make the stock exhaust manifolds work, but it's more to deal with.

Ya, in CA the conversion engine has to be from the same class - car to car, truck to truck.
My OEM exhaust manifolds from the 2002 Camaro SS, which had the flanges modified in order to fit the conversion, are off the car now and being used as templates for another CA guy who's doing the conversion. I believe he's making some drawings of my modded flanges for the use of other CA folks. If he doesn't, I probably will.
With the modded OEM manifolds, you also need to mod the steering shaft with a u-joint/heim. I don't know for sure, but I think RH sells a motor mount which incorporates a mounting bracket to support the modded steering shaft.

In the case of my inquiry to BAR, the ONLY part remaining from the truck engine would be the engine block itself - aside from the bore of the cylinders, how much can the block affect emissions? The LS motors even have steel liners!
F*ck this place.
