Default cannot turn crank

Ok this is on a 86 951, I apologize for the length but want to give full picture. This started with a bad fuel pump. I replaced fuel pump and filter. car would not start. Because of lack of time it sat that way for a little less then a year. Went at it again and discovered cracked vacuum line leaking fuel by fuel damper. Replaced damper with one from an 88 na. pressurized vacuum lines and discovered a few more cracks and replaced. I blew out the sparkplugs because they were wet. once I got it all together it would almost start, catch and then continue just turning. The car then stopped cranking, I figured battery and put the charger on and called it a day. I ordered up a fuel rail pressure gauge from Lindsey Racing to make sure I had pressure but have not installed yet since I can't crank motor to depressurize line. Now, battery is charged and I turn key and lights dim and nothing as if a bad battery but lights are bright etc when not cranking, battery is good so I figure burned out started or vapor lock or something. My plan was to turn the motor from the front pulley bolt just to get things moving. No go. I can not turn the crank, plugs are out. Any ideas? there is oil in car. I did get pressure while care was turning over.

Out of curiosity, have you checked the timing belt? I'm wondering if you didn't jump timing, and bent a valve or more, thus causing the no start, and eventually the valve took enough of a beating it jammed the engine. can you turn it backwards with the crank bolt?

+1 OK I was thinking the same thing but did not want to say it but since it's been said...

Pull the timing belt and see if you can then turn the motor over by hand, pretty sure you'll have your answer then! Good luck!

Also try removing the starter. If it went bad with the bendix engaged you might be bound up

I dont know about the timing belt. I think the 951 will just bend the valves and continue cranking, the 951 valves dont make as much contact as the N/a ones do.

I'd pull the starter like he said and try it then.

+1, this gets my vote. Probably burned up the starter and it's stuck with the bendix engaged. Plus if you get lucky and this is the problem, it's a whole lot easier and cheaper to fix than anything involving valves...

I was thinking starter also as a place to start. I just returned from the store with bigger pry bar I think that getting to the starter is probably the better place to start before adding more force.

I don't think its a timing belt problem. It was cranking fine and it did slightly catch at times so I think the underlying problem is fuel, aside from the current bound up problem.

My job and life in general has taken me away from working on the toy's, I forgot some of the frustrations that came with these cars. I'm glad I can spend with them again.

Well bad news I guess, Starter is out, no change in being able to turn the motor. The gear on the starter can turn in one direction. So I guess the next step would be to get the timing belt off and see what turns and what doesn't. I was due for a new timing belt, this wasn't really the way I wanted to do it.

This might explain why the engine would kind of catch every once in awhile... Timing was off. We'll see...

I'll have to tear in to figure it out but I will be surprised if something broke while turning it over, the engine wasn't eaven running. I have searched a bit and I will check reference sensor also.
