Default new side mirror gasket problem

Is there a trick to getting these gaskets to fit? I've tried soaking them in hot water and stretching the hell of out them... but the shape just doesn't look right. Even when I can get it to stretch around the mirror base, the gasket won't stay put unless I'm holding it with 3 hands, which makes installing the mirror near impossible.

Karl,

I used a bit of adhesive to help hold in place, yet even still had to 'work it' around as I assembled.

I'm with you on the shape doesn't seem quite large enough/correct. PITA should be its part number. Good Luck with it.

Karl, try the early (pre-85.5) gasket. I went thru some old threads, and it looks like its possible that some 85.5 had the early base, and the gasket is more of a rectangle than yours appears. Look at the pics on Pelicans site and you'll see what I'm thinking.

What year car are the mirrors off of? I'd go with above and try an early gasket.

Thanks for the input guys - the car is an 86, so it's possible it may have the early bases. I'll give those a try and report back..

One trick for installing them (and I agree with the others, I believe you have the wrong gasket) is to heat them up with a heat gun so that they are pliable. It makes them a lot easier to install. Hopefully it goes without saying that you want to just get them warmed up, not melted.

I bought new gaskets for a 86> 944 and had the same problem. I have a 1986 951 and with the old type gaskets it worked just fine. The shape is slightly differerent.

well, a set of early gaskets solved the problem. not only are they actually the right size, the rubber seems to be a little softer which made for an easy installation.
