Default 951 S&R sensors -- oops! *UPDATE*

I wished I had replaced these while the intake was out.

Speed sensor has the head shaved down. I've never touched these and I doubt the PO had a clue about the function so after I put ~30k on in the past three years and intermittent cutouts while running combined with non restarts... Tach was doing the odd bouncing.

I'm amazed I haven't been stranded yet.

Install was tight, what may have caused this?

*I can't believe this -- after reviewing PET I see that the washer is held in place with with the retaining bolt, I don't recall seeing a washer when I disassembled it. Inspecting the sensor base and bellhousing, they have matching dirt marks and the underside of the sensor lobe has the scribe marks from me working it away from the bellhousing.

How long could one of these run without that washer???

The only thing I can think of is the magnet inserted in the flywheel is backing out. I belive they are glued in place on the flywheel and the only one I ever saw come out was on a BMW, but what else could cause it?? Maybe something loose in the bell housing area like clutch lining. It is going to be a big job either way to get in there and fix it. Hope I am wrong!!!!

LOL Kevin, you a lucky SOB. when I did that on my 924, it tore the sensor off, and jammed it between the bell housing and fly wheel...and locked it up

the bracket was set at the wrong depth, one had no shim...mounted withouttesting and the .8mm washer and got lucky. If the starter ring gear had worn it all the way through, there would have been very fine threads of copper all through there and probably gotten into your clutch as well. good catch.

LOL Kevin, you a lucky SOB.
I like the sound of that!

Silver, the linear pattern suggests... flywheel? I'd guess if the setscrew had started to drift it would have taken the sensor head clean off in the worst case, or thrown free and got caught in the muck in the bottom of the bell housing. The pickups are magnetized.

Spence, stock 951s had a double spring clutch disk.

Now the question is.... can I just shim the sensor or do I have to do the entire mount, keep in mind, Turbo space constraints?

WELL, doing a little more research -- I need to get a visual on the set screw condition before installing the new pickup.

I did that once before. You can still replace it with the intake on. It is kind of a pain though. Good luck.

FYI the sensors are aviable from bosh directly or Bmw for a cheeper price. The Bmw sunsors are identical except the wire is about 4" longer so you will need to wrap them in a loop and zip tie them up.
The Bosch part for the 944 is 0 261 000 2 Between $170-110 depending
The Bosch Part fpr the BMW is 0 261 000 3 Between $75-50
Good info, thanks Silver.

After spending a couple of hours yesterday in rush hour highway traffic, torching the engine bay, the replacement speed sensor seems to have solved my starting problems.

Yep, the Turbo's old ref sensor has brought the NA back to life -- as a speed sensor. For years I put up with irratic tach operation, new sensor... problem solved!

Add one of these to your must have list, like a new DME relay.

Silver, PM enroute.
